In the competitive world of retail, staying ahead of the curve requires innovative approaches to understanding and engaging customers. Synthetic data and behavioral analysis are two powerful tools that are revolutionizing how retail brands operate, offering new ways to gain insights and drive success.

The Rise of Synthetic Data in Retail
Synthetic data, generated through advanced algorithms, mimics the statistical properties of real-world data without containing any actual personal information. This approach offers several key benefits for retail brands:

Privacy Protection: Synthetic data allows retailers to analyze customer behaviors and preferences without compromising privacy, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.

Cost Efficiency: Creating synthetic data can be more cost-effective than collecting and processing large volumes of real data. It also enables the generation of diverse datasets that might be difficult to gather otherwise.

Enhanced Model Training: Synthetic data provides a robust foundation for training machine learning models, especially when real data is scarce or incomplete. This leads to more accurate and reliable AI systems.

Moving Beyond Traditional Surveys
Retailers have traditionally relied on self-reported surveys to gather customer feedback. While useful, these surveys have limitations:

Bias and Inaccuracy: Self-reported data can be biased, as customers may provide answers they think are expected rather than their true opinions.

Limited Scope: Surveys capture a snapshot of opinions at a single point in time, missing out on the dynamic nature of customer behaviors.

Embracing Behavioral Analysis
To overcome these limitations, retail brands are increasingly turning to behavioral analysis. This involves collecting and analyzing data on how customers interact with products and services in real-time. Key benefits include:

Real-Time Insights: Behavioral analysis provides immediate feedback, allowing retailers to make timely adjustments and improvements.

Comprehensive Understanding: By examining actual behaviors rather than self-reported data, retailers gain a deeper and more accurate understanding of their customers.

Personalization: Behavioral data enables the creation of personalized shopping experiences, enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Case Studies in Retail
1. Optimizing Store Layouts with Synthetic Data

A leading retail chain used synthetic data to simulate customer interactions within their stores. By analyzing these interactions, they were able to optimize store layouts, improve product placements, and enhance the overall shopping experience. This led to a significant increase in sales and customer satisfaction.

2. Personalized Marketing Campaigns

A major e-commerce retailer leveraged synthetic data to develop and test targeted marketing campaigns. By analyzing customer behaviors and preferences, they were able to create personalized offers that resonated with individual shoppers, resulting in higher conversion rates and increased customer loyalty.

3. Enhancing Inventory Management

A global retail brand used behavioral analysis to gain insights into product performance and customer demand. By understanding which products were popular and predicting demand trends, they optimized their inventory levels, reduced costs, and minimized stockouts.

Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) are revolutionizing how cities are designed, managed, and experienced. These dynamic virtual replicas of physical urban environments integrate real-time data, predictive analytics, and advanced technologies like AI and IoT to simulate and optimize city operations. As urbanization accelerates and climate challenges intensify, UDTs are emerging as indispensable tools for creating smarter, more sustainable, and community-centric cities. This article explores the transformative potential of UDTs, focusing on their benefits, integration with smart technologies, sustainability applications, community engagement, and future opportunities.

1. Benefits of Digital Twins for City Planning & Management

UDTs empower cities to tackle complex challenges through data-driven decision-making. Key benefits include:

A. Real-Time Monitoring & Predictive Analytics

UDTs aggregate data from IoT sensors, drones, and satellites to monitor infrastructure, traffic, and environmental conditions in real time. For example, Singapore’s Virtual Singapore uses UDTs to simulate crowd movements during emergencies, enabling faster evacuation planning 1. Predictive analytics powered by machine learning (ML) forecast issues like traffic congestion or energy demand spikes, allowing preemptive interventions 615.

B. Enhanced Urban Design & Simulation

City planners use UDTs to test hypothetical scenarios, such as the impact of new buildings on wind patterns or flood risks. Helsinki’s 3D+ model simulates urban heat islands to guide green space allocation, reducing temperatures by up to 3°C in high-density areas 1. Such simulations minimize costly trial-and-error in physical infrastructure projects 6.

C. Cost Savings & Operational Efficiency

By optimizing resource allocation, UDTs reduce operational costs. Dubai’s Digital Twin saves $1.5 billion annually by streamlining energy use in buildings and transportation networks 1. Similarly, AI-driven HVAC systems in smart buildings adjust energy consumption based on occupancy data, cutting costs by 20–30% 15.

D. Resilience to Climate & Disasters

UDTs model climate risks, such as flooding or extreme heat, to strengthen urban resilience. A framework developed by Turner and Sun (2023) enables real-time flood prediction using sensor data, helping cities like Jakarta deploy adaptive drainage systems 1.

2. Integration with Smart City Technologies

UDTs thrive when combined with complementary technologies:

A. IoT & Edge Computing

IoT sensors embedded in infrastructure feed real-time data into UDTs, enabling dynamic updates. For instance, Barcelona’s smart lampposts adjust lighting based on pedestrian traffic detected by IoT cameras, reducing energy waste 15. Edge computing processes data locally, minimizing latency for critical applications like emergency response 15.

B. AI & Machine Learning

AI algorithms analyze vast datasets to identify patterns and optimize outcomes. In Seoul, ML-powered UDTs predict air quality changes and reroute traffic to lower pollution levels 6. AI also enhances predictive maintenance, flagging deteriorating bridges or pipelines before failures occur 15.

C. Blockchain for Transparency

Blockchain secures data integrity in UDTs, ensuring tamper-proof records for public audits. Rotterdam’s UDT uses blockchain to track carbon credits, fostering trust in sustainability initiatives 15.

D. Metaverse & Extended Reality (XR)

Metaverse platforms like Singapore’s Digital Urban Experience Lab allow stakeholders to interact with UDTs via VR, exploring proposed developments in immersive 3D. This fosters collaborative planning and public feedback 3.

3. Supporting Sustainable Cities & Reducing Carbon Emissions

UDTs are pivotal in achieving net-zero goals:

A. Energy Optimization

UDTs model energy flows across grids, integrating renewables like solar and wind. For example, Amsterdam’s UDT reduced emissions by 40% by optimizing microgrids and prioritizing solar storage during peak demand 15.

B. Circular Economy & Waste Management

UDTs track material lifecycles, promoting reuse. Oslo’s twin identifies construction waste hotspots, diverting 70% of debris from landfills through recycling partnerships 15.

C. Carbon Footprint Analytics

Cities like Copenhagen use UDTs to visualize emissions from buildings, transportation, and industry. The data informs policies such as congestion pricing and retrofitting mandates, cutting CO2 by 25% since 2022 13.

D. Climate Action via Earth Digital Twins

Initiatives like the EU’s Destination Earth simulate planetary-scale climate impacts, guiding cities in adapting to rising sea levels and extreme weather 13.

4. Community Engagement & Participatory Governance

UDTs bridge the gap between governments and citizens:

A. Co-Creation Platforms

Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative lets residents propose ideas via UDT-linked apps, such as park designs or bike lane routes. Over 50,000 submissions have been implemented since 2023 3.

B. AR for Public Interaction

Augmented reality apps overlay UDT data on smartphones, enabling residents to report potholes or view pollution levels in real time. Taipei’s CityAR platform increased civic reporting by 200% 3.

C. Addressing Equity & Inclusion

UDTs highlight disparities in resource allocation. Los Angeles’ twin revealed “heat deserts” in low-income neighborhoods, prompting targeted tree-planting initiatives 13. However, critics warn that without inclusive design, UDTs risk exacerbating social divides 3.

5. Future Opportunities & Challenges

Emerging technologies will redefine UDT capabilities:

A. Quantum Computing & Advanced Simulations

Quantum-powered UDTs could simulate entire cities at atomic precision, enabling hyper-accurate climate models and material science breakthroughs 15.

B. Autonomous Systems Integration

“To make sure that the consequences of actions in the simulator were as close as possible to the ones in the real world, we designed a method to optimise the simulator with real data,” said Zurich researcher Elia Kaufmann.

Further training involved flying a real drone automatically, and feeding back into the learning process the on-board camera and IMU data, plus extra information gathered from an external position-tracking system – a tracking system that was not used during the races.

The races

The races – held in 2022 – were on a 75m long track designed by a professional drone racer, said the University, defined by seven square gates through which the drones had to pass, all inside a 30 x 30 x 8m volume.

The humans had a week to practice on the track, and were:

Alex Vanover – 2019 Drone Racing League world champion

Thomas Bitmatta – twice MultiGP international open world cup champion

Marvin Schaepper – thrice Swiss national champion

In each race, two drones flew simultaneously, one controlled by a human and one by the AI. The first to complete three laps wins.

Swift lost some, but won more against each of the humans. It had the fastest lap, with Vanover half a second behind with the fastest human lap.

“On the other hand,” said the University, “human pilots proved more adaptable than the autonomous drone, which failed when the conditions were different from what it was trained for – for example if there was too much light in the room.”

The AI is described in detail in the Nature paper ‘Champion-level drone racing using deep reinforcement learning‘, which can be read in full without payment.

According to this paper, Swift consists of two modules: a perception system that translates high-dimensional visual and inertial information into a low-dimensional representation, then a control policy that takes that representation and issues control commands – the latter is the deep reinforcement trained feed-forward neural network.

Credit: British Army

Featuring over 1,500 defence and security suppliers, DSEI 2023 at the ExCeL will bring together governments, the armed forces and industry representatives from all over the world.

On display at the British Army’s stand at DSEI will be the Hydra 400 drone alongside an Aether mothership.

The Hydra 400 is a pioneering new generation of heavy lift drone using hybrid propulsion technology. Compact and portable, the drone can be transported in the back of a Hilux or similar and assembled ready for flight in six minutes.

The drone is powered by single spool jet turbines, producing 500N (50kg) thrust providing a maximum lift of 400kg.

Ministry of Defence (MoD) funding will be needed for Hydra Drones Ltd, the company that developed Hydra 400, to progress the concept.

It is proposed that the Hydra 400 carry a lethal payload, the Brimstone missile developed by Stevenage-based MBDA, which is the strategic partner to the MoD for complex weapons

The Brimstone missile weighs 50kg, is 1.8 metres in length and has a 180mm diameter. It is guided by millimetric wave radar and semi-active laser.

Brimstone offers ‘one missile, multi-platform’ versatility and is designed to be integrated onto helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, including fast jets, land vehicles, naval platforms and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The missile is battle proven with over 98% success rate in defeating static, moving and manoeuvring target sets including main battle tanks and other armoured vehicles.

An Anduril Ghost Drone provides real time Artificial Intelligence, surveillance and multi-mission reconnaissance capability. Combined with the versatility of the Hydra drone and the precision of the Brimstone missile, this is a fully automated ‘end to end’ decision support weapon system.

General Sir Patrick Sanders, Army Chief of the General Staff, says: “We are responding to the operating environment that we see in Ukraine. For example, I am struck by the fact that in the evolving Ukraine drone campaign, 40% of losses are attributed to pilot error.

“When the electro-magnetic spectrum is so heavily contested, automation fails, and the skill of the pilot predominates. We need ‘war fighters’ – whether they are cyber specialist, drone pilots or infantry soldiers – to be stronger, faster, more intelligent and more resilient.

“By the end of this year, we will form a new UAS Group within a reorientated Joint Aviation Command, providing a focal point for industry, around which we intend to develop the next generation of UAS platforms in ever closer partnership.”

At DSEI, General Sir Patrick Sanders spoke about the continued restructure and modernisation of the Army, in line with its Future Soldier programme and informed by the lessons of Ukraine.

If funding is provided by the MoD, Hydra and a dummy-payload representing Brimstone will be tested during the next phase of the Army’s Warfighting Experiment (AWE).

This is a series of trials and experiments across the UK and overseas where industry partners have been tasked with providing solutions to the challenges of urban warfare, harnessing tech to prepare for complex future warfare.

The next AWE phase, known as Exercise Blunting Strike, will take place at Copehill Down in November.

Dr Stephen Prior, CEO of Hydra Drones Ltd said: “The Army Warfighting Experiment has provided the framework and opportunity for British SMEs, like Hydra Drones Ltd, to collaborate with traditional primes, such as MBDA, but also to be competitive in their own right and innovate at a speed that larger companies might struggle with.”

Dave ‘Pos’ Postlethwaite MBE, MBDA’s Head of UAS sales said: “MBDA is committed to supporting the British Army by delivering cutting edge and UK sovereign battle-winning technology in-line with the Land Industrial Strategy, Op Mobilise and Future Soldier.

“Joining forces with Hydra Drones in this innovative sovereign capability, that can be delivered at pace with the right investment, is an exciting joint Army/industry opportunity.”

In the forefront of the Army’s Future Soldier programme is 2nd Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment who are testing cutting-edge technology.

With drones taking centre stage on battlefields across the globe, cutting-edge uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) have been tested by the Army.

At last year’s Army Warfighting Experiment in Portsmouth Naval Base, a range of UAS systems that use different technologies to defeat drones were put through their paces.

One such system was the Wingman, a wearable RF sensor for drone detection, and the Pitbull, a wearable jammer that utilises smart jamming to defeat enemy drones. This effective portable counter-UAS system will protect dismounted soldiers and ensure they are less susceptible to detection and attack.

Some of the other unique drone capabilities tested included carrying blood plasma to injured soldiers on the battlefield while other drones demonstrated how it can evacuate casualties.

The Hydra XL 300 and Malloy T400 drones, for instance, showed how they could lift a casualty of up to 120kg over a range of up to 25km, with spare capacity and zero emissions.

The results of AWE will provide evidence to inform the Army and Defence which capabilities should be invested in and developed for the Army to remain competitive on the global stage.

This collaboration with industry is about using the solutions they already have, to counter the problems faced by the British Army, without spending time and money going back to the drawing board and starting from scratch.

As the earth continues to warm, more nations are experiencing wildfires. last year has seen fires in Turkey, Greece, and Spain, while a wildfire in Hawaii last month claimed at least 115 lives and completely destroyed the town of Lahaina. A record-breaking wildfire season has scorched more than 15 million hectares in Canada. There, officials are carefully examining the limitations of conventional firefighting techniques.

In Europe, the fastest-warming continent due to climate change, firefighters are exploring new ways to battle monster blazes. Emergency and disaster management crews are deploying drones than can detect fires earlier and are even reviving traditional practices such as using sheep and goats to graze the grass.

Here are some of the more innovative wildfire solutions:

Drones

Drones are becoming ubiquitous on the front line.

Domingos Xavier Viegas, a professor at the Coimbra University in Portugal who specializes in wildland fire behavior, says departments across Europe are using drone technology to map vegetation, identify high-risk areas, track wildfires, collect data and deliver last-mile water deposits during wildfires. Larger drones, some of them amphibious, are also being developed to act as aerial tankers or hose bearers. These firefighting robots can spray water and fire-retardant chemicals over longer distances and larger areas.

This can also save the lives of firefighters who otherwise have to get “so close to the fires,” says Kenneth Geipel, founder of Danish drone company Robotto Co. Geipel started Robotto in 2019 after seeing the devastation left by record wildfires in Sweden, Greece and California a year earlier. He felt firefighters lacked the data needed to map and tackle blazes at the earliest stages.

While satellite imagery comes with delays, drones can in real time identify smoke or heat signatures, warn fire control authorities and calculate the position, size and intensity of a blaze, Geipel says.

Artificial intelligence

All of this new information requires more data-processing. Drone sensors capture more data than is humanly possible to process in real time without using AI tools, Geipel says.

In 2022, the World Economic Forum launched an AI and machine learning initiative called FireAId. The pilot project, started in Turkey in the wake of the country’s worst-ever wildfires in 2021, showed these tools can reduce response time and risk to firefighters.

3D training

Training regimens for firefighters are also getting more high-tech and more collaborative as departments in different countries compare best practices.

In Catalonia, the Pau Costa Foundation has created a three-dimensional system that allows trainees and fire teams to run through emergency wildfire scenarios. This so-called “digital sandbox” helps students to visualize the behavior of a forest fire and practice fire-management strategies, preparation that can be particularly helpful for firefighters in northern European countries.

“It’s something that major cosmopolitan cities like London had never experienced before,” says Sami Goldbrom, a group commander at the London Fire Brigade (LFB). “But it looks likely that we’re going to be experiencing them for the foreseeable future.”

England saw its worst wildfire season last year: July 19, 2022, was LFB’s busiest day since World War II. The LFB has since set up training connections with Australia, Greece and Spain.

Vegetation-clearing robots

The best way to tackle wildfires is to prevent them in the first place. That’s why selective culling of trees and smaller plants is an important aspect of reducing wildfire risk.

Enter vegetation-clearing robots, which can remove potential wildfire fodder. Such devices are being developed and will work alongside drones, Viegas says. The drones map out the high-risk areas from above, and the mechanical foot soldiers weed out vegetation in those patches.

Fire Flocks

Until vegetation-clearing robots become more commercially viable, some fire-management bodies are relying on an age-old pastoral technique: inviting sheep and goats to do the same job.

In Catalonia, so-called Fire Flocks – sheep or goats that graze on forest floors to clean up vegetation – are making a comeback. A project to revive this tradition was initiated in 2016, starting with a small pilot of just 48 hectares in the Baix Emporda region of Catalonia. By 2022, it had expanded to 651 hectares.

Catalonia is one of the few places on the planet where fire-prevention measures have reversed an increase in blazes, according to Marc Castellnou, a wildland fire incident commander and analyst with the Catalan Fire Service. During the 1990s, about 13,500 hectares burned in wildfires every year – roughly 1% of the region’s forests, he says. Since then it has fallen to between 1,200 and 1,500 hectares each year, on average.

But even the best mitigation strategies don’t negate the urgency of curbing greenhouse gas emissions to prevent fire risk from getting even worse. “If a fire has a burning power of more than 10,000 kilowatts per square meter, it can’t be extinguished no matter how many resources we put in,” Castellnou says. Some of Europe’s wildfires in recent years have hit six times that intensity.

Credit: NDD Corporation

NDD’s IT specialists have devised sophisticated algorithms that process the vast amounts of data collected by drones during various operations. These data-driven insights empower businesses to make informed decisions, optimize workflows, and gain a competitive edge in their respective industries.

Here are some examples of systems NDD developed:

Embedded System

A microprocessor-based computer hardware and software system known as an embedded system is created to carry out a specific task, either independently or as a component of a larger system.

Cloud Computing

Customers can access infrastructure and apps through the internet using cloud computing, rather than installing and maintaining them locally.

Communication Control

A communication controller is a tiny computer that controls how input/output (I/O) data is transmitted through a network, host computer, or computer. All data is stored on a mainframe computer and may be tracked by users across all network activities thanks to a communication controller.

Machine Learning

The practise of educating a computer system to generate precise predictions from input data is known as machine learning.

These predictions might include determining whether a piece of fruit in a picture is an apple or a banana, identifying pedestrians crossing the street in front of a self-driving car, determining whether the word “book” refers to a paperback or a hotel reservation, determining whether an email is spam, or accurately recognising speech to create captions for a YouTube video.

Physics Simulation

A mathematical model whose variables specify the state of the system at a certain time is the foundation of a physics simulation.

New business solutions that NDD propose:

 Real-time/offline image processing of drone camera images

In many real-world drone applications, a combination of both real-time and offline processing may be used. For example, the drone might perform real-time image processing to detect and respond to immediate hazards while simultaneously capturing data for further detailed analysis offline.

 Making a flight plan, recording flight, registration and storage of photos, orthoimage generation, etc. using cloud services

Cloud-based image processing platforms can perform advanced photogrammetry techniques to generate orthoimages and 3D models from the drone’s captured images. These platforms leverage the cloud’s computing power to process large datasets efficiently and produce high-quality results.

 Automatic drone control based on user-defined flight plans

Users may provide waypoints, which are certain GPS coordinates or sites that the drone should visit throughout the operation, to create their flight plans. Additionally, users may customise each waypoint’s flying characteristics, including altitude, speed, and camera settings.

 Maneuver training and test flights using drone simulators

Maneuver Training:

1. Flight Controls Familiarization: Beginners can use drone simulators to get acquainted with the flight controls, understanding how different inputs affect the drone’s movement in a risk-free setting.

2. Basic Flight Maneuvers: Pilots can practice essential maneuvers like takeoff, landing, hovering, ascending, descending, and turning. Repeatedly performing these maneuvers in the simulator builds muscle memory and enhances proficiency.

Test Flights:

1. Mission Planning: Before conducting a real flight mission, pilots can use simulators to plan and visualize their routes, waypoints, and actions, ensuring a well-prepared flight plan.

2. Scenario Rehearsal: For critical missions or complex flight scenarios, pilots can rehearse the entire flight in the simulator, identifying potential issues and optimizing the mission’s success.

 Visualization of flyable airspace by fluid simulation.

Visualization of flyable airspace using fluid simulation is an innovative concept that combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and virtual reality (VR) to provide drone pilots and operators with a more intuitive and immersive understanding of the airspace they can navigate. This approach allows users to visualize the flow of air and potential air hazards in real-time, creating a dynamic representation of the airspace that is easy to interpret.

Cloud Services ：AWS, GCP etc.

Machine Learning ：PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.

Simulator ：Unreal Engine, AirSim, Ardupilot, etc.

Devices ：Drones（Parrot, DJI, etc.) , Smartphones（Android, iPhone／iPad),
Smart Glasses, etc.

Credit: Wired.com

Have you heard about the AI drone that the Air Force used to simulate an assault on its operators?

Colonel Tucker Hamilton, the US Air Force’s commander of AI testing and operations, delivered the warning address late last month in London at an aerospace and military conference. It seems that the plan was to train a drone to find and shoot down surface-to-air missiles using the same kind of learning algorithm that is used to teach computers to play video games and board games like chess and go.

“Sometimes the human operator would tell him not to kill that threat, but he got his benefits by eliminating that threat,” Hamilton reportedly said to the London audience. “So what happened? […] Because the operator stood in the way of it getting there, it killed them.”

It appears that AI specialists are only now beginning to provide warnings that it may occur due to more sophisticated and peculiar algorithms. The tale naturally rapidly went viral, garnering the attention of various notable individuals, news outlets, and Twitter users.

There is only one problem: the experiment never took place.

The Department of the Air Force told us in a statement that it “has not engaged in any such AI drone simulations and remains committed to the ethical and responsible use of AI technology.” This was not a simulation, but rather a hypothetical thinking experiment.

Hamilton hurried to explain the situation as well, admitting that he had “put it wrong” in his presentation.

To be equal, military occasionally practice tabletop “war games” with fictitious situations and futuristic technologies.

Hamilton’s “thought experiment” could have also been impacted by actual AI research, which demonstrates issues resembling those he outlines.

OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT, the chatbot at the center of today’s AI boom, did an experiment in 2016 that demonstrated how AI systems may occasionally misbehave when given a particular aim. The company’s researchers discovered that an AI agent that was programmed to score in a boat-driving video game started crashing into things in order to gain more points.

Although theoretically feasible, it is crucial to remember that this kind of error shouldn’t happen unless the system was poorly constructed.

Will Roper, a former assistant secretary of procurement for the US Air Force who oversaw a proposal to give an augmentation algorithm control over some U2 spy plane operations, reveals that an AI system just couldn’t attack it Operators in a simulation. He claims that it would be similar to a chess program that could turn the board to prevent losing additional pieces.

When artificial intelligence (AI) is eventually used to combat, “we start with software security architectures that use technologies like containerization to create’safe zones’ for AI and forbidden zones where we can prove that AI doesn’t come into play,” according to Roper.

This takes us full circle to the current existential threat that AI faces. There have been calls for a halt in the creation of more advanced algorithms and warnings of a threat to humanity that is equivalent to the nuclear threat of weapons and pandemics as a result of the rapid improvement of language models like the one underlying ChatGPT.

When evaluating bizarre cases concerning AI systems turning against people, it is obvious that these warnings are of little assistance. And when it comes to important matters, such as how generative AI might worsen social bias and propagate misinformation, uncertainty is certainly not what we need.

However, this meme about errant military AI warns us that we urgently need greater openness into how cutting-edge algorithms operate, more engineering and research geared on developing and deploying them securely, and better means to inform the public about what is being utilized. These might be particularly significant as military, like everyone else, race to benefit from the most recent developments.
