Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan) (KWAP) has donated RM100,000 worth of drones and accessories to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to assist their surveillance efforts in enforcing the Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement today, it said the deployment of additional drones for surveillance will enhance PDRM’s capability to provide wider coverage and monitoring of hard-to-reach areas.

“This effort is in collaboration with one of KWAP’s technology portfolio company, Aerodyne Group. Aerodyne Group is a leading global drone-based asset management solutions and services provider,” it said.

It added that Aerodyne is currently working closely with PDRM on aerial monitoring during the MCO and will continue to complement PDRM with their resources and knowledge on the use of the fleet of drones for surveillance.

Besides its contribution in distributing drones to help PDRM keep an eye on the situation, KWAP had also contributed RM500,000 to government-linked companies and government-linked investment companies disaster response network fund.

The fund was aimed to aid the demands from local hospitals for medical equipment, personal protective equipments (PPEs), ventilators and food supplies among others.

“Our effort in this respect is in line with KWAP’s corporate level environmental, social, and governance (ESG) guideline, whereby one of the pillars encompasses social issues.

“Through this, we have been adopting an official stance that while we strive to generate good returns on our investment, we would still be mindful of the needs of the general community, pensioners, and future pensioners creating positive impacts in the areas and the public that we operate in,” said KWAP chief executive officer, Syed Hamadah Syed Othman.

The commercial drone revolution is affecting industries that range from agriculture to replacing dangerous jobs to the delivering of medicines to remote areas. According to a study by Price Waterhouse Cooper, the global market value for business services that use drones is over US$127 billion. The value quantifies the impact of drone technology through examination of commercial applications across different sectors.

If we are to derive the maximum socioeconomic benefits from Industry 4.0, we should not confine ourselves to merely importing and using the technologies associated with it. We must also look at potential business opportunities that it will bring. A key opportunity is in the manufacture of components that make up robotics, artificial intelligence products and the like.

Seeing an opportunity in the Malaysian market, the two women heading Best Events Productions Sdn Bhd, Ms Sarah Bakri and Ms Hanniz Efni decided to create an event to build awareness and move the industry forward.

The inaugural Global Drone Conference held on the 21st October 2019 with the theme “Asia’s Flightpath: Future Growth, Industry Verticals” co-hosted by Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) had speakers representing FlyingLabs (Nepal), Zipline (United States), UniKL MIAT, UiTM (Sarawak), Altınay Aerospace & Advanced Technologies (Turkey), Aeronerve, and Aerodyne (Malaysia with a global presence) sharing their experiences and solutions with industry leaders, the academia and general public. Showcases by Zipline, Aerodyne, Acis Technology, Average Drone, MUDAS, Aeronerve and Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (APM) was free for the public to visit.

The conference was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development, YB Datuk Wira Dr. Mohd Hatta Ramli.

“We are committed to building an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem that ensures the marginalised are given opportunities via the National Entrepreneurship Policy 2030. This policy is in line with the government’s priority in creating high skilled jobs as we embrace a digital economy.

It is time we see more Malaysians venturing into non-traditional businesses such as the commercial drones sector. This will also create opportunities for work in other ASEAN countries who are also seeing a demand in the use of drone technology.” stated YB Datuk Wira Dr. Mohd Hatta Ramli.

“For Malaysia to move into the Industry 4.0 effectively it will require the convergence of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Big Data into drone technology. This will mean that we will see drones playing an increasingly important role in people’s lives and business activities”. States Hanniz Efni the organising chairman of the Global Drone Conference.

“Currently, drones are used extensively to carry out inspections or survey and map terrain in harsh or hazardous environments. For work on power lines or oil rigs, the benefits to the health and safety of human workers are clear”. Sarah Bakri added.

The Global Drone Conference was established to empower local and international drone solution companies in Malaysia with a support system to assist them to scale and ensure that a sustainable ecosystem is created for the growing drone industry globally.

This year’s conference focused on Energy & Utilities; Forestry & Agriculture; Infrastructure & Transportation; Public Safety & Emergency Services, Security; and Surveying & Mapping.

This first event is an introduction to what’s in store for the next conference to be held on 2 & 3 March 2020 at MITEC.

“We’re hoping to have a bigger showcase next year with round table sessions, workshops and a Drone Hackathon. We’re working closely with MITEC, local and international partners to make next year’s event even more exciting!” Shared Hanniz Efni.

Q.For readers who are potentially unfamiliar with dronestream.app, how would you describe the company in one, short, sentence?

A.Dronestream is a software platform that allows organizations to access and view data from a drone in real-time, such as the video feed, location, communication, battery life and much more.

Q.The UAS industry is a relatively young and growing industry with many companies finding varied degrees of success, What is it that separates you from others in the market?
A.Dronestream gives organizations a live window to the drone pilots remote controller; it does this with mobile apps and a web browser based site, enabling viewers to tap into the feed from anywhere in the world via any device – something which has not been done with such ease within the industry to-date.

Q.As some users may come from small operations that are unaccustomed to using technology in their businesses, how do you feel about the technological proficiency level required to use dronestream.app? Do you believe the software is easy enough for anyone to learn or does it require sufficient education/training to use?
A.We built Dronestream to be intuitive so users can start using within 15 seconds of downloading the app (that’s right, 15 seconds and you can be broadcasting to your team while continuing your flight). Viewers will only need to download the app, and quickly set up an account to receive push notifications when their drone pilot is in the air!

Q.Kids in school are getting more advanced in their thinking. How would you recommend they use dronestream.app?
A.Great question – Imagine how interactive this could be in the classroom, a drone could be flown over building, volcano, lake, historical landmark and the children could communicate with the pilot via our app to gain a closer look at certain aspects that can be visualised from the air, meanwhile the teacher provides and informative walkthrough.

Q.We are trying to encourage students to learn more about STEM and Best Events Productions is even creating a Drone Hackathon in March 2020 to encourage innovative thinking when it comes to countering drones. What are the most important skills and technologies to know in order to work with a company like dronestream.app?
A.If you wish to be a hands on creator, coding is key, although if coding isn’t your skillset (like me) then a knowledge of aerospace is key, and a mindset that allows you to look at problems/pain points within the industry and come up with solutions – it’s important to remember that you are solving a problem, whether it’s for the consumer or an organization, people will pay good money for you to make their lives easier and efficient!

Q.While our readers are worldwide, we’re based in Malaysia which is very young in the UAV scene. We’ve heard of slight controversy when it comes to the FAA regulations in the industry. Do you feel that the current regulations are too stringent or not harsh enough? Do you believe that the requirement for a pilot’s license with manned flight hours is reasonable for commercial UAV purposes or unnecessary?
A.Regulation is indeed holding the industry back, but for good reason as drones can be dangerous for manned aviation (although globally there has been no reported fatalities due to an aircraft colliding with a drone). The developing world (where regulation is limited) drone companies have been able to stretch their wings and fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (perfect example would be ZipLine). If investment continues to flow for the industry, then we can continue to jump through the regulatory hoops until we satisfy the needs of governments and the companies that will benefit from flying machines. A manned pilots license is overkill for drone flights, although enables a great knowledge base for airspace which should be provided to all drone operators, whether flying commercially or for fun.

Your perspectives on UAS in the next years

I think we are currently in the most challenging part of the industry’s lifecycle, and its only going to get harder. That said, when we break through the regulatory, battery longevity, industry use-case challenges, we will see something that will change how the world flows logistically, with data retrieval and environmentally; similar to the way smartphones have completely changed… well everything!

What do you think will be the biggest challenges

Industry buy-in – the ‘build it and they will come’ strategy will not work in this industry (at least not as much as we would like), as there has been so much negative press on drones that major work will need to be done to win big companies over to the beneficial use-cases.

The other challenges will mainly be regulation and battery longevity.

A comprising UAV-related punch line

Drones will eventually be connected to almost every aspect of our life, let’s find ways they can help society today!

Harry Howe, CEO & Co-Founder of Dronestream

From a career in the pharmaceutical industry Harry became obsessed with replacing cumbersome processes with simple software solutions that enabled organizations to work more efficiently, save time and remove frustration. He brought this skillset over to the Drone Industry (which is where his die-hard passions were from flying in his spare time for the film and media industry). From here, he set out to create a software platform that the industry was desperately missing: Dronestream, a way for organizations to obtain real-time data from their drone pilot, anywhere in the world.

More than just airlines and aircraft manufacturing, the aerospace industry includes original equipment manufacturing (OEM), avionics, electronics, rockets, space vehicles, satellites, and drones.
The aerospace industry is also exploring the use of drones to provide inspections of commercial aircraft. With traditional technology, visual inspections can take up to six hours, but drones could significantly reduce the amount of time and provide increased accuracy and ease of documentation. When combined with visual processing algorithm systems, the footage gathered by the drones could send service work orders to an aircraft’s maintenance team as soon as a fault is identified. This could lead to greatly reduced maintenance service costs and improved overall safety.

Enabling safe commercial and private drone usage even over crowed places

Parachute safety solution manufacturer Drone Rescue Systems GmbH supports the European research project Formation flight for in-Air Launcher 1st stage Capturing demonstration (FALCon). Under the leadership of DLR, research is being conducted on how launch vehicles can be returned to the launch site as efficiently as possible for re-use.
“We are proud to be part of the FALCon research project together with five international partners and DLR as part of HORIZON2020 (EC grant 821953), the EU’s largest research and innovation program to date. The capture and towing of rocket stages in flight, i.e. an autonomous and safe landing, is a particularly interesting topic for us as a manufacturer of parachute safety solutions,” says Andreas Ploier, CEO of Drone Rescue Systems GmbH, in a press release.

Identifying foreign objects on runways at US airports

Seattle, USA-based provider of aerospace testing, engineering, and certification services, AeroTEC, has completed two proof-of-concept drone surveys at airports in Washington state.
The aerial surveys, in collaboration with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Aviation Division, took place at Sunnyside Municipal Airport and Prosser Airport.
Designed to assess the use of photogrammetry to evaluate runway obstacles, this was the first time the technique had been used for WSDOT Aviation’s 5010 airport inspections.
AeroTEC’s Part 107 pilots flew a drone to capture a series of images which were then used to create virtual models of the airports. The models were then analyzed and used to identify obstacles in a predetermined area near the end of each runway as required by the Federal Aviation Regulations.
By using the drone-enabled photogrammetry technology, AeroTEC was able to provide WSDOT with a runway obstacle report with a far higher degree of accuracy and lower cost than traditional methods.

Drone Delivery Network

In June 2019, PT Garuda Indonesia signed a deal with Beihang UAS Technology in China creating a network of cargo drones that can fly automatically across the entire country using dedicated landing strips. Thirty different logistic centers will be created across the entire country, each with a landing strip for the drones.

These drones are not the ones carrying little more than a camera; they have a wingspan of 18m, a range of 1,200km, and a cargo capacity of 2.2 tons. In effect, they are small aircraft that can be remotely operated from the logistic centers.

Inspection of the externals of a facility

Camera drones are currently being used to make sure that birds’ nests are not blocking gutters. This greatly reduces the inspection time compared to a manual inspection. The drone can also be used to scare birds away, and discourage them from nesting there is the future!

Inspection drones are also being trialled by airlines such as Easyjet. In this case, they are being developed to carry out aircraft pre-flight inspections fully autonomously. The drone has an advantage over a human inspector because they can see the top surfaces of the wings and fuselage very easily.

Now, skilled employees can spend time analyzing the data collected from the drones instead of spending hours manually inspecting aircrafts. This will help lower costs and achieve extreme efficiency in the industry. Drones can also prevent injuries on the job as they wouldn’t require employees to use a lift to access the top of an aircraft.

How did you become interested in drone technology?

Heliguy started life in 2008 as an RC Helicopter specialist in rural Northumberland – England’s most northerly county – before expanding the business into the emerging drone market. The owner of Heliguy recognised the massive potential of drones from their very earliest stages of development and has since built a team which is driven to remain at the forefront of the growing UAV market.

Well-renowned in the industry, Heliguy has become the UK’s leading drone supplier, establishing itself as a one-stop-shop drone expert, offering sales and aftercare, training, repairs and research and development. Heliguy is one of DJI’s largest and trusted European enterprise channel partners and is recognised as a Gold Partner, certifying that Heliguy can provide expert knowledge and services to enterprise customers.

What is the market for drones right now? How has it changed since you started your
business?

The evolution of drones has been staggering. In recent years, there has been a major shift in drone operators, moving from hobbyists and commercial photographers to those utilising unmanned aircraft for more industrial purposes, such as mining, agriculture, construction and public safety.
This drive towards enterprise is illustrated by this industry breakdown, taken from a 2018 report by Skylogic Research.

The results showed that commercial photography/video leads the way at 18%, but surveying and mapping follows closely behind at 13%. Other industry sectors such as asset/infrastructure/facility inspection, agriculture/farming and emergency services and search and rescue also feature in the chart – giving enterprise a really strong presence in the results.

Reflecting on this shift in use cases, Brandon Montellato, DJI’s programme manager for enterprise, told a recent webinar: “The technology has definitely been evolving from consumer/prosumer to enterprise solution.

“Ultimately, we are seeing this evolution from photography and cinematography – which has a fairly low-barrier entry and is easy to use on site – to more advanced data deliverables, like surveying, mapping and asset and infrastructure.”

This changing pattern – from consumer to enterprise – appears to be accelerating and the market is strong, albeit with a shift in use cases.

How are business owners using drones today?

Drones are becoming a valuable tool for business owners across a range of industries, such as public safety, construction, infrastructure, energy inspections and the media – helping to save time, improve safety, reduce costs and provide quick and accurate results.

In public safety, for example, drones – which can be integrated with thermal and/or zoom cameras – are being used to look for missing people, carry out aerial surveillance and analyse crash scenes from above.

There are many success stories within public safety which showcase the use and benefits of drones. For example, Lincolnshire Police’s drone unit earned its first prosecution after the drone uncovered a cannabis farm inside a property. Using a thermal camera and flying above the house, the heat source from the drugs farm was detected, as the image below shows. The filming from the drone took one minute and 20 seconds, and it was only in the air for five minutes from start to finish.

Another example is in construction, where drones are being used for quicker stockpile measurements, informative aerial progress reports and accessing hard-to-reach areas. Infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty, is benefitting from drone technology, supplied by Heliguy.

Explaining some of the benefits of drones, Craig Matthews, Balfour Beatty UK’s Principal UAS Manager, said: “The drones are a great time saver. Take a recycling compound for example. If we were to measure stockpiles with traditional survey tools, it would take a lot longer to measure the site and gather the data, whereas drones enable the team to do fairly rapid measurements of different types of materials and earthworks.

It would take a surveyor, using traditional handheld equipment, about a day to measure the stockpiles and process the data. But using the drone, we can fly over the compound in 15 minutes and process the model in about two hours.

“The drones also make it safer to gain these quantities. To put it simply, drones help unbelievably with health and safety, taking people out of dangerous situations.”

What are some of the most innovative ways you’ve seen drones being used?

Drones are being used in many innovative ways and are helping to provide information which previously wasn’t possible.

For instance, earlier this year, a team of scientists used drones, including a DJI M600 Pro supplied by Heliguy, to complete the most comprehensive survey of Chernobyl’s Red Forest – one of the most radioactive locations on Earth.

Flying a range of multi-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft, the scientists from the National Centre for Nuclear Robotics (NCNR) created 3D maps which not only provided up-to-date information on the sites with the greatest contamination, but also revealed previously
undetected radiation hotspots.

Detecting these hotpots was a good demonstration of what can be achieved with drones, instead of conducting manned aerial surveys or ground surveys, and showed that monitoring radioactive sites and responding to nuclear incidents can be done without exposing humans to risk.

Elsewhere, Amazon has said that it is planning to use drones to deliver packages to customers.

Why should drone owners/operators consider getting insurance for their drones?

Drone insurance covers you for damage to your drone, or against claims made by someone whose property your drone may accidentally damage.

Legally, insurance requirements differ dependent upon whether you are a commercial or recreational user. Hobby drone pilots do not need insurance, but commercial drone pilots do. At the minimum, if you’re caught flying an uninsured drone as a commercial user, you may face fines.

However, if you are a hobbyist, it is still wise to cover yourself, just in case the worst does happen. There are two ways of paying for drone insurance. The traditional, annual policy, or a new method is known as pay-as-you-fly (PAFL).

What are the risks of not protecting your investment?

Not having insurance could be a costly affair.

After all, drone insurance covers you for damage to your drone, or against claims made by someone whose property your drone may accidentally damage. So, if you lose control of the drone and it falls on to someone’s car, you’ll be covered for both the damage to the drone and for the claim from the driver.

Commercial drone insurance policies vary between providers, but most include personal/public liability cover if someone does make a claim against you for damage or injury. You can also include cover for the theory and practical exams involved in becoming a commercial pilot.

What are the most common errors you see operators making with their drones? What is the fallout from these mistakes?

Some of the common mistakes include a lack of pre-flight planning, such as not checking the weather forecast and not being aware of the airspace and relevant rules and regulations.

A pre-flight checklist is important for all drone pilots to complete before beginning every flight, helping ensure you bring all of your equipment to your flight, fully charged and ready to go, as well as avoid issues that could lead to a drone crash that could have easily been prevented.

What type of training should drone operators get before they start flying their drones?
What are the benefits of this training?

In the UK, drone pilots who are wanting to fly commercially need the PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operation). As an accredited NQE, Heliguy delivers these training courses across numerous stunning UK venues. The PfCO course gives candidates the chance to learn the ins and outs of commercial drone operations. Heliguy’s PfCO Course includes guidance on night-time permissions and support in building the all-important Operations Manual – a document required by the CAA for all commercial drone operators.

What do drone operators need to know about FAA registration and compliance?

It is crucial for all drone operators to be aware of FAA registration and compliance, to ensure they are flying legally and safely.
The rules and regulations are split into various categories, including hobbyists and those wanting to fly commercially.

As a hobbyist – also known as a recreational flyer – you need to register your drone and mark it on the outside with the registration number (PDF). You must also adhere to a number of rules, such as:
– don’t fly your drone at or below 400 feet when in uncontrolled airspace.
– don’t fly in controlled airspace (around and above many airports) unless you have received an airspace authorisation for operations in controlled airspace through LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability), or you are flying at a recreational flyer fixed site that has a written agreement with the FAA.
– Keep your drone within your line of sight, or within the visual line-of-sight of a visual observer who is co-located and in direct communication with you.

Hobbyists should also be aware of new laws coming in the future, which will mean that drone operators will need to pass an online aeronautical knowledge and safety test and carry proof of test passage.

For Certificated Remote Pilots including Commercial Operators, there are other things you need to be aware of.

If you have a small drone that is less than 55 pounds, you can fly for work or business by following the Part 107 guidelines.

However, some operations are not covered by Part 107 and will require a waiver. Some examples include operating from a moving vehicle or aircraft, operating multiple small unmanned aircraft systems, or operating over people.

You will also need to pass a knowledge test to receive your remote pilot certificate.

Once you have done this, registration costs $5 and is valid for three years. Once you’ve registered, mark your drone (PDF) with your registration number in case it gets lost or stolen.

What advice can you offer new drone operators on getting the most out of their investment?

Operating a drone can sometimes be tricky. So to avoid any silly mistakes, it’s essential to read the product’s manual and pay close attention to pre-flight preparations. After you understand your drone’s capabilities and limitations choose a safe test flight zone and practice some basic manoeuvres before you take the leash off.

Additionally, remember to take advantage of free online resources and contact Heliguy for any help/advice.

Also, check the weather and don’t fly in adverse conditions; ensure your battery has enough power for your return flight; and don’t fly too aggressively.
