In recent years, drones have evolved from being mere gadgets for hobbyists to becoming pivotal tools in various industries. One of the most promising applications of drone technology is in logistics and transportation. This article explores the burgeoning field of drone logistics in the Asian market, highlighting its potential, current applications, and future prospects.

What is Drone Logistics?

Drone logistics involves the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to transport goods and services. These drones can range from small quadcopters delivering packages to large fixed-wing drones capable of carrying heavier loads over longer distances. The primary advantage of using drones in logistics is their ability to bypass traditional transportation routes, reducing delivery times and costs.

Why Asia?

Asia is a particularly fertile ground for the growth of drone logistics. The region’s diverse geography, ranging from dense urban areas to remote rural locations, presents unique challenges that drones are well-suited to address. Additionally, the rapid growth of e-commerce in countries like China, India, and Japan has created a demand for faster and more efficient delivery solutions.

Current Applications in Asia

E-commerce Deliveries: Companies like JD.com and Alibaba in China have been pioneers in using drones for last-mile deliveries. These drones can deliver packages to remote areas that are difficult to reach by traditional means, ensuring that customers receive their orders quickly and efficiently

Medical Supplies: In countries like India and Indonesia, drones are being used to deliver medical supplies to remote areas. This is particularly crucial in times of natural disasters when roads may be impassable

For instance, Zipline, a company known for its medical drone deliveries, has expanded its operations to several Asian countries, providing life-saving supplies to hard-to-reach locations

Agriculture: Drones are also being used in agriculture to monitor crops, spray pesticides, and even plant seeds. This application is particularly prevalent in countries like Japan and South Korea, where advanced technology is being integrated into traditional farming practices

Benefits of Drone Logistics

Speed and Efficiency: Drones can significantly reduce delivery times by flying directly to their destinations, avoiding traffic and other ground-based obstacles. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with heavy congestion

Cost-Effective: By reducing the need for large fleets of delivery vehicles and cutting down on fuel costs, drones can make logistics operations more cost-effective. This is a major advantage for businesses looking to optimize their supply chains.

Accessibility: Drones can reach remote and inaccessible areas, providing essential services to communities that are otherwise hard to reach. This is particularly important in disaster relief scenarios where timely delivery of supplies can save lives.

Challenges and Considerations

While the potential of drone logistics is immense, there are several challenges that need to be addressed:

Imagine a drone that doesn’t just fly but also walks, hops, and jumps like a bird. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, right? Well, thanks to some brilliant minds at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, this is now a reality. Let’s dive into the fascinating world of bird-inspired drones and see how these innovative machines are changing the game.

The Inspiration Behind Bird Drones

Birds are nature’s ultimate aviators. They can soar through the skies, perch on branches, and even walk on the ground with ease. This versatility inspired researchers at EPFL to create a drone that mimics these abilities. The result? The RAVEN drone, which stands for Robotic Avian-inspired Vehicle for multiple Environments.

What Makes RAVEN Special?

Unlike traditional drones that rely solely on propellers for movement, RAVEN is equipped with legs that allow it to walk, hop, and jump. These legs are not just for show—they’re designed to store and release energy, much like a bird’s tendons and muscles. This means RAVEN can take off from the ground with a powerful jump, just like a crow.

Walking and Hopping: Why Bother?

You might wonder why a drone needs to walk or hop when it can fly. The answer lies in efficiency and versatility. Flying consumes a lot of energy, and sometimes it’s just easier to walk. For instance, if a drone needs to move short distances on the ground or navigate through tight spaces, walking can be more practical. Plus, the ability to hop over obstacles or jump to take off makes RAVEN incredibly adaptable.

Real-World Applications

So, where can we see these bird-inspired drones in action? Here are a few exciting possibilities:

Search and Rescue: In disaster-stricken areas, drones like RAVEN can navigate through rubble and debris, reaching places that are inaccessible to humans or traditional drones. Their ability to walk and hop over obstacles makes them perfect for these challenging environments.

Agriculture: Imagine a drone that can walk through fields, inspect crops up close, and then take off to get an aerial view. This could revolutionize how farmers monitor and manage their crops, leading to more efficient and sustainable farming practices.

Urban Delivery: In bustling cities, drones often face challenges like narrow streets and crowded areas. A drone that can walk and hop could navigate these urban jungles more effectively, delivering packages right to your doorstep.

The Future of Bird-Inspired Drones

The development of RAVEN is just the beginning. Researchers are already looking into ways to make these drones even more bird-like. Future versions might have flapping wings for more efficient flight or enhanced legs for better ground mobility. The possibilities are endless, and the potential applications are vast.

Bird-inspired drones like RAVEN are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in drone technology. The new Pelican leverages a hybrid VTOL airframe with no control surfaces to combine the reliability and flight stability of a multirotor platform, with the extended range of a fixed wing craft. With no ailerons, elevator or rudder, the Pelican’s durable-yet-simple design eliminates common points of failure and exponentially extends operational time between maintenance overhauls. Designed to meet the 55-pound takeoff weight limitation for FAA Part 107 compliance, the Pelican can carry payloads of 5 kilos on missions up to 40 kilometers roundtrip. Available in multiple model variations, the Pelican can be optimized for extended range operations or to deliver payloads from altitude with the company’s RDS2 drone delivery winch. A2Z Drone Delivery will first display the new RDSX Pelican at the upcoming AUVSI XPONENTIAL (May 9-11 in Denver, CO). For more information about the new RDSX Pelican, please visit: https://www.a2zdronedelivery.com/rdsxpelicanhome.

Available in multiple configurations, the RDSX Pelican can be customized for an array of missions. Configured with the A2Z Drone Delivery drone winch, the Pelican enables deliveries from altitude where spinning propellers are kept far from people and property, mitigating consumer privacy concerns of low-flying drones while abating intrusive rotor noise. Alternatively, for missions in which the drone is able to safely land at its destination, a simple servo-release mechanism can release payloads and expand the Pelican’s payload capacity. Beyond logistics use cases like residential deliveries, the Pelican can be fully customized to suit unique mission criteria such as aerial mapping, drone inspection, forestry services, search and rescue operations, water sample collection, offshore deliveries, mining, etc.

The Pelican’s hybrid fixed-wing/multirotor airframe eliminates the traditional control surfaces seen on most winged aircraft. With no servos to replace and minimal moving parts, the Pelican’s simple-yet-robust design extends the time between recommended maintenance overhauls to reduce downtime and cost. To maximize scalability of those drone delivery ecosystems, the RDSX Pelican was also designed to minimize operational costs for commercial drone delivery fleets. Boasting an attractive 13 cents/kg/km operating cost, the RDSX Pelican delivers the efficiency, payload capacity and reach needed to scale a commercial drone delivery operation.

“Here at A2Z Drone Delivery, our development is not just about maximizing performance, it’s about creating usable tools designed to get work done,” said Aaron Zhang, Founder and CEO of A2Z Drone Delivery, Inc. “A full-service drone delivery ecosystem will need a fleet of short, medium and long-range UAV platforms capable of depositing payloads in an array of settings. The new RDSX Pelican is the highly efficient, long range delivery platform in that last-mile fleet. It is thoughtfully designed to minimize potential points of failure, reducing the overall cost-per-kilometer of logistics operations, all while providing maximum payload flexibility.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is giving Prime Air additional permissions that allow it to operate drones for more deliveries in a wider area.

FAA regulations require that all commercial drone operators are able to maintain a line of sight to their drones until it approves a technology that can safely enable drones to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), a term used in aviation to describe flying a drone where the remote pilot can’t see it directly with their own eyes.

Instead, a remote pilot relies on instruments or technology to monitor and control the drone at all times. FAA approval for Amazon to operate drones BVLOS will allow Prime Air to further expand drone deliveries and lays the foundation for the e-tailer to scale drone delivery operations to more locations in the U.S.

To obtain this permission, Amazon says it developed a BVLOS strategy, including an onboard detect-and-avoid technology it has spent years developing, testing, and refining. The approval process included Amazon submitting crucial engineering information to the FAA and conducting flight demonstrations in the presence of FAA inspectors to show how the system works in real-world scenarios, such as in the presence of real planes, helicopters, and a hot air balloon.

This new authorization and new permissions will allow Amazon to expand its existing drone delivery area in College Station, Texas. Later this year, Amazon plans to begin integrating drone deliveries into its delivery network, meaning drones will deploy from facilities next to Amazon same-day delivery sites.

Amazon initially received an Air Carrier Certificate from the FAA in 2020 that allowed the company to operate as an airline and deliver small packages via drone. With that certification and the newly granted permission to fly beyond the line of sight, Amazon says it is preparing to scale drone delivery for customers.

“Our vision has remained unchanged since we started working on Prime Air: to create a safe and scalable way to deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using highly autonomous drones,” Amazon said in a corporate blog post. “To achieve our goal of delivering 500 million packages, per year, by drone, by the end of this decade, we knew we had to design a system capable of serving highly populated areas and that was safer than driving to the store. It’s taken years of inventing, testing, and improving to develop these breakthrough technologies, and now, on the heels of regulatory approval and cutting-edge technology, we’re excited to launch this next chapter for Prime Air.”

1. Easy to Deploy

The DJI Dock 2 is remarkably easy to deploy. It is physically smaller and is approximately 70% reduction in both size and weight compared than its predecessor making it easily transportable by two individuals. With the previous system, operators would have to take the Dock onsite and use the M30 to confirm if there was a strong enough GNSS signal in the area. This was a time consuming process which could last over 5 hours. This is no longer an issue; operators can now use additional drones to evaluate a site without taking the Dock 2 with you. Thus, reducing the evaluation period from over 5 hours to a matter of minutes. Transporting a drone that weighs less than 1kg is easier and much more efficient than transporting an entire dock unit for site evaluation.

9. Cloud Mapping

Cloud mapping has become much easier. Operators no longer need to download DJI Terra for model processing; they can create a 3D model directly through FlightHub 2. In the past, operators would have to transfer data from the drones SD card onto a computer, upload it to DJI Terra, and then import it to FlightHub. FlightHub 2’s ability to generate 3D models online has eliminated these steps, saving valuable time and resources.

Conclusion

DJI Dock 2 enables mapping, surveying, inspection professionals, and first responders to achieve previously impossible missions. Its unmatched ease of deployment, increased drone options, advanced integrated features, and safety enhancements set a new standard for remote drone piloting. The system’s cost-efficiency and comprehensive capabilities make it the ideal solution for enterprises and professionals seeking to maximize operational efficiency and output. DJI Dock 2 represents the future of remote drone technology, empowering users to achieve unprecedented levels of performance and productivity in their respective industries.

Aerodyne Group, a provider of drone-based enterprise solutions, and Singapore-based DroneDash Technologies have announced a partnership to initiate cross-border drone delivery services. This collaboration marks an advancement in logistics and supply chain capabilities between Malaysia and Singapore. The service is poised to enhance operational efficiency, offering a delivery solution that is five times faster than traditional sea freight.

The partnership aims to navigate through regulatory landscapes to secure necessary permits for establishing shore-to-shore operations along the Malaysia-Singapore corridor. Utilizing advanced unmanned sea and air technologies, the initiative focuses on safe navigation through congested maritime and aerial paths, ensured by a sophisticated navigation system supported by satellite communications and 5G roaming.

Initially targeting delivery routes to Johor Bahru and Iskandar Malaysia due to their strategic locations near Singapore, the service plans to expand throughout Malaysia. Commercial operations are expected to commence in the third quarter of 2024, with drones capable of carrying up to 30 kilograms and reaching speeds of 150 km/h within a four-hour flight span.

This service is designed for critical deliveries such as urgent documents, high-value electronics, medical supplies, and perishable foods, promising to redefine logistics between the two nations. Features for enhancing cross-border logistics include real-time tracking, advanced security protocols including 256-bit encryption, and blockchain technology for logistical oversight.

Paul Yam, CEO of DroneDash, highlighted the potential for significant productivity and cost improvements in the logistics sector, alongside environmental benefits from reduced emissions and carbon footprint. Mudzakkir Hatta, CEO of Aerodyne’s Malaysia operation, expressed pride in contributing to the economic connectivity between Malaysia and Singapore, particularly with the recent establishment of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

This collaboration not only aims to enhance trade cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore but also to create new opportunities in the logistics sector through job creation in drone operation and maintenance.

Compared to traditional methods of transportation, the company says that CO2 emissions are significantly reduced using drone delivery services, which can be completed in around 15 minutes, while also minimising in port time for the ship.

The new approach also improves safety by removing the need for agents to board vessels and eliminating the risks associated with such operations.

“This innovative delivery approach shows how we can transform the operational landscape of port agency, but identifying new ways to conduct operations that reduce time, save costs and minimise emissions while vessels are in port,” said Mak Sin Cherng, S5 Agency World’s Global Sales Manager.

“S5 is committed to delivering a new operating model for port services that embraces environmental, social and governance practices and, by creating more sustainable port calls, contributes to the maritime industry’s drive towards a cleaner future.”

In August, a new aerial postal service was introduced to replace the regular ferry service between the islands of Orkney. Skyports Drone Services used DLV-2 Speedbird Aero craft, which can carry up to six kilograms of payload over a maximum distance of 16 kilometers, for a three-month trial. During a mission last week, one of those UAVs ended up in the water due to a technical issue that caused a remote monitor to deploy the onboard parachute during a controlled descent.

Though neither Skyports nor Royal Mail posted website information on the incident, UK press outlets that caught wind of it said the UAV had been returning from Graemsay to its base on the nearby island of Hoy when the problem arose. Though the craft was carrying no payload when it was ordered down – and was successfully aborted according to protocols – the partners paused the service pending inquiries.

The Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST), the Yeosu City government, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MoLIT) are supporting the Yeosu City drone project, which aims to provide inter-island drone deliveries within the coastal Yeosu region of Korea. The drone services consortium, comprising Skyports Drone Services Korea, Marine Drone Tech, and RGB Lab, is conducting a series of flight testing and proof-of-concept projects, the first of which is this one. The project’s first phase began in June of this year and will last until November.

Phase one of the project will see regular flights operated between the Yeosu mainland and three islands (Gaedo, Geumodo, Songdo) providing an airbridge for communities in hard-to-reach parts of the region. Through the five-month project, the consortium aims to demonstrate the viability, safety and benefits of drone operations, and highlight how regular services can improve welfare, access, and connectivity for island residents and local businesses.

The beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) service will fly distances of 20-60km. Using a mobile application which has been developed for the project, island residents will be able to request the delivery or collection of a range of cargo, including:

Pharmaceutical goods (with the intent to carry more complex medical goods, such as pathology samples, in the future)

Restaurant food and groceries

Fresh seafood (such as sea urchins and octopus), caught by islanders and sold to restaurants on the mainland

The drone delivery business offers for the aging island population a never-before-possible link to the mainland, improving access to medical care and food delivery, as well as the chance to sell their products and seafood at a higher price. To further increase island residents’ access and communication, the team will investigate the sustainability of mail deliveries.

The project will be carried out with Skyports Drone Services’ new light payload electric VTOL aircraft and RigiTech’s Eiger drone technology. After months of rigorous flight testing, the Yeosu City project marks the RigiTech Eiger’s first commercial use since Skyports Drone Services and RigiTech formed their cooperation.

The Eiger was chosen because of its high volume (3 kg) payload and long range BVLOS capability, which are characteristics that make it a good fit for the Yeosu region. The aircraft supports the drone operator’s scale-up and contingency planning, joining the equally capable Swoop Aero Kookaburra III and Kite in the Skyports Drone Services fleet.

“Where better to launch our new partnership with RigiTech than in Skyports Drone Services’ newest market?” stated Mitchell Williams, country manager for Skyports Drone Services in Korea. We are pleased to launch the Eiger and start delivering goods around the Yeosu area.

The Yeosu City project possesses the fundamental components that we seek out when initiating a new project: a compelling and scalable use case, a willingness for innovation, and support from the community and government. We are eager to demonstrate to Skyports Drone Services and our colleagues in the Korea consortium how drone deliveries can meaningfully and sustainably link isolated areas.

This idea is an amazing endeavor that perfectly fits with our mission to build global drone delivery networks that connect isolated locations and enhance people’s quality of life. Now that our technology has been demonstrated and accepted as dependable, it is time for it to flourish in the innovative and energetic Yeosu region.

We’re excited to join the Skyports Drone Services’ project and fleet, to work together to push the boundaries of BVLOS flights in new continents as our own team keeps growing,” said Adam Klaptocz, co-founder and CEO of RigiTech.

A Yeosu City official said, “Yeosu City is set to lead the drone industry by expanding infrastructure to foster drone mobility, a new growth driver for the future, and conducting a drone logistics delivery demonstration project aimed to provide convenience for island residents, who live in a logistically vulnerable area. The project reflects the characteristics of the Yeosu region, which has 45 inhabited islands.”

Phase two of the project will review the benefits and use cases of the project and aim to scale the service, making it available in more locations and on a permanent basis.

“The MorphoLander is a hybrid drone that can fly over, land on, and walk across rough terrain before launching tiny drones from its back could be useful for search-and-rescue operations,” according to New Scientist.

The giant drone has a shorter battery life, but the little drones may fly about on a mission for a longer period of time, necessitating the carrier drone system.

The giant drone can fly and handle tough terrain, but the battery life is barely 12 minutes.

“The smaller drones have a longer flight time and can carry out separate missions.

“This could let the system provide a longer flying time in search and rescue missions.”

Dzmitry Tsetserukou at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow, Russia, and his colleagues have created the MorphoLander – a hybrid drone that acts like an aircraft carrier – to get smaller drones near to areas of interest and solve the problem of limited battery life.

The MorphoLander has four articulated legs that allow it to land on uneven terrain, and even walk across it, while maintaining a level position. It can also take off vertically like a helicopter, thanks to its large rotors.

One of the main challenges in using drones for search-and-rescue missions is their limited battery life. The smaller drones that can access hard-to-reach areas typically have even shorter battery lives. This restricts their ability to stay in the air for extended periods of time, reducing their effectiveness in locating and rescuing people.
