<p style="text-align: justify;">The 9th Japan Drone 2024 and the 3rd Next Generation Air Mobility EXPO 2024 were held at Makuhari Messe (Mihama-ku, Chiba City) under the theme of &#8220;Now, on to the next era&#8221; from 5th &#8211; 7th June this year.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A record breaking 261 companies and organizations exhibited, and 21273 visitors attended both exhibitions.  </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Next year&#8217;s &#8220;10th Japan Drone 2025 / 4th Next Generation Air Mobility EXPO 2025&#8221; will be held at Makuhari Messe for three days starting on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In December of this year, &#8220;Japan Drone/Next Generation Air Mobility EXPO 2024 in Kansai&#8221; will be held as the second regional event (December 18 &amp; 19, 2024). The momentum of the Osaka/Kansai Expo, will serve as a base for eVTOL social demonstration experiments to promote new initiatives for the event in 2025, contributing to the revitalization of industry and the economy.</p>

<p>Drone owners, both commercial and recreational, will soon have to register with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).</p>
<p>Failure to do so could see them fined up to RM50,000, or jailed for up to three years, or both.</p>
<p>Corporate bodies are liable for a maximum fine of RM100,000.</p>
<p>&#8220;Even now, registration is required, but compliance is low due to the high number of drones,&#8221; CAAM chief executive officer Captain Datuk Norazman Mahmud.</p>
<p>He said drone owners would have to register on CAAM&#8217;s Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UAS TM), which will be set up by the third quarter of next year.</p>

<div>&#8220;Drone operators will need to request permission via a mobile app before flying their drones. If the drone meets all requirements and is in an unrestricted area, approval will be granted instantly.&#8221;</div>

<p>The UAS TM is aimed at managing the increasing number of drones in the country&#8217;s airspace more efficiently.</p>
<p>Presently, the air traffic management system caters to civil aviation, regular aircraft and drones.</p>
<p>But with the number of drone owners rising, drones need to be managed better.</p>
<p>He said the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) data indicates there were 155,995 drone operators in the country.</p>
<p>&#8220;Imagine the infrastructure needed to oversee 155,995 drone owners.&#8221;</p>
<p>Under the UAS TM, drone registration and flight approval processes will be automated through a four-stage process: U1, U2, U3, and U4.</p>
<p>&#8220;In U1, when you buy a drone, you register it with your name in the system. U2 will address the flight approval process. U3 are advanced services supporting more complex operations in dense areas, such as assistance for conflict detection and automated detect-and-avoid functionality,&#8221; said Norazman.</p>
<p>U4 involves integration with manned aviation and supports high levels of autonomy and connectivity.</p>
<p>The UAS TM will ensure drones do not encroach on designated areas for air traffic and restricted airspaces.</p>
<p>&#8220;The operation of the UAS TM will involve multiple agencies, including the Chief Government Security Office, the Survey and Mapping Department and Sirim,&#8221; Norazman said.</p>
<p>&#8220;However, for more complex commercial operations, such as pipeline monitoring or agricultural tasks, additional oversight and certification will be required.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added that around 80 per cent of drone use was recreational, and the remaining 20 per cent covered surveillance and transport.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Designing and developing a drone is a complex thing. The entire process could take nearly a year. But with Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the development of next-generation autonomous and semi-autonomous drones could happen in months. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Ramanathan Narayanan, CEO of Chennai-based Dhaksha Unmanned Systems, a leading Indian innovator in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technology, says the technology has been a game-changer as the platform has streamlined the design processes, enabling Dhaksha to develop innovative and efficient drones at an accelerated pace. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Dassault’s Modsim modelling and simulation tools on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is touted as a unified modeling and simulation solution that enhances design exploration, optimisation, and validation on the 3DEXPERIENCE cloud platform, he said. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Dhaksha is leveraging the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, including its SIMULIA software applications, to design and develop a comprehensive range of UAS solutions for agriculture, defence, surveillance, and delivery applications. &#8220;The technology which came into the market recently, will save 30-40% overall design development time and helps in deciding the material to be used,&#8221; said Ramanathan. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">&#8220;The integration of modelling and simulation is a powerful tool that can significantly reduce the time and cost associated with physical prototyping. It allows engineers to experience every aspect of their designs virtually, enabling concurrent performance checks and refinements, which ultimately leads to better and more efficient product development,&#8221; he added. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Highlighting the ongoing innovation in the industry, Tarik Chaib, chief technology officer, CATIA, Dassault Systèmes, said air taxis could be a reality soon in Dubai. He said Dassault has the expertise to help manufacturers relying on vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft that can take off and land vertically without relying on a runway. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Narayanan said that the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has already developed an electric flying taxi and the government is working on regulations. He added that both large companies and start-ups need agility to quickly introduce and refine products. Innovation is crucial for faster market entry. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">“We are equipping Dhaksha to develop next-generation drones faster and more efficiently. This will not only solidify their position in the Indian drone market but also propel the industry forward,” said Deepak N G, managing director, India, Dassault Systèmes. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The India drone market is projected to grow from $654 million in 2024 to $1,437 million by 2029, at a compounded annual growth rate of 17% during the forecast period, says a report by MarketsandMarkets. The volume in the India drone market is projected to grow from 10,803 units in 2024 to 61,393 units by 2029. </p>
