In the competitive world of retail, staying ahead of the curve requires innovative approaches to understanding and engaging customers. Synthetic data and behavioral analysis are two powerful tools that are revolutionizing how retail brands operate, offering new ways to gain insights and drive success.

The Rise of Synthetic Data in Retail
Synthetic data, generated through advanced algorithms, mimics the statistical properties of real-world data without containing any actual personal information. This approach offers several key benefits for retail brands:

Privacy Protection: Synthetic data allows retailers to analyze customer behaviors and preferences without compromising privacy, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.

Cost Efficiency: Creating synthetic data can be more cost-effective than collecting and processing large volumes of real data. It also enables the generation of diverse datasets that might be difficult to gather otherwise.

Enhanced Model Training: Synthetic data provides a robust foundation for training machine learning models, especially when real data is scarce or incomplete. This leads to more accurate and reliable AI systems.

Moving Beyond Traditional Surveys
Retailers have traditionally relied on self-reported surveys to gather customer feedback. While useful, these surveys have limitations:

Bias and Inaccuracy: Self-reported data can be biased, as customers may provide answers they think are expected rather than their true opinions.

Limited Scope: Surveys capture a snapshot of opinions at a single point in time, missing out on the dynamic nature of customer behaviors.

Embracing Behavioral Analysis
To overcome these limitations, retail brands are increasingly turning to behavioral analysis. This involves collecting and analyzing data on how customers interact with products and services in real-time. Key benefits include:

Real-Time Insights: Behavioral analysis provides immediate feedback, allowing retailers to make timely adjustments and improvements.

Comprehensive Understanding: By examining actual behaviors rather than self-reported data, retailers gain a deeper and more accurate understanding of their customers.

Personalization: Behavioral data enables the creation of personalized shopping experiences, enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Case Studies in Retail
1. Optimizing Store Layouts with Synthetic Data

A leading retail chain used synthetic data to simulate customer interactions within their stores. By analyzing these interactions, they were able to optimize store layouts, improve product placements, and enhance the overall shopping experience. This led to a significant increase in sales and customer satisfaction.

2. Personalized Marketing Campaigns

A major e-commerce retailer leveraged synthetic data to develop and test targeted marketing campaigns. By analyzing customer behaviors and preferences, they were able to create personalized offers that resonated with individual shoppers, resulting in higher conversion rates and increased customer loyalty.

3. Enhancing Inventory Management

A global retail brand used behavioral analysis to gain insights into product performance and customer demand. By understanding which products were popular and predicting demand trends, they optimized their inventory levels, reduced costs, and minimized stockouts.

Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) are revolutionizing how cities are designed, managed, and experienced. These dynamic virtual replicas of physical urban environments integrate real-time data, predictive analytics, and advanced technologies like AI and IoT to simulate and optimize city operations. As urbanization accelerates and climate challenges intensify, UDTs are emerging as indispensable tools for creating smarter, more sustainable, and community-centric cities. This article explores the transformative potential of UDTs, focusing on their benefits, integration with smart technologies, sustainability applications, community engagement, and future opportunities.

1. Benefits of Digital Twins for City Planning & Management

UDTs empower cities to tackle complex challenges through data-driven decision-making. Key benefits include:

A. Real-Time Monitoring & Predictive Analytics

UDTs aggregate data from IoT sensors, drones, and satellites to monitor infrastructure, traffic, and environmental conditions in real time. For example, Singapore’s Virtual Singapore uses UDTs to simulate crowd movements during emergencies, enabling faster evacuation planning 1. Predictive analytics powered by machine learning (ML) forecast issues like traffic congestion or energy demand spikes, allowing preemptive interventions 615.

B. Enhanced Urban Design & Simulation

City planners use UDTs to test hypothetical scenarios, such as the impact of new buildings on wind patterns or flood risks. Helsinki’s 3D+ model simulates urban heat islands to guide green space allocation, reducing temperatures by up to 3°C in high-density areas 1. Such simulations minimize costly trial-and-error in physical infrastructure projects 6.

C. Cost Savings & Operational Efficiency

By optimizing resource allocation, UDTs reduce operational costs. Dubai’s Digital Twin saves $1.5 billion annually by streamlining energy use in buildings and transportation networks 1. Similarly, AI-driven HVAC systems in smart buildings adjust energy consumption based on occupancy data, cutting costs by 20–30% 15.

D. Resilience to Climate & Disasters

UDTs model climate risks, such as flooding or extreme heat, to strengthen urban resilience. A framework developed by Turner and Sun (2023) enables real-time flood prediction using sensor data, helping cities like Jakarta deploy adaptive drainage systems 1.

2. Integration with Smart City Technologies

UDTs thrive when combined with complementary technologies:

A. IoT & Edge Computing

IoT sensors embedded in infrastructure feed real-time data into UDTs, enabling dynamic updates. For instance, Barcelona’s smart lampposts adjust lighting based on pedestrian traffic detected by IoT cameras, reducing energy waste 15. Edge computing processes data locally, minimizing latency for critical applications like emergency response 15.

B. AI & Machine Learning

AI algorithms analyze vast datasets to identify patterns and optimize outcomes. In Seoul, ML-powered UDTs predict air quality changes and reroute traffic to lower pollution levels 6. AI also enhances predictive maintenance, flagging deteriorating bridges or pipelines before failures occur 15.

C. Blockchain for Transparency

Blockchain secures data integrity in UDTs, ensuring tamper-proof records for public audits. Rotterdam’s UDT uses blockchain to track carbon credits, fostering trust in sustainability initiatives 15.

D. Metaverse & Extended Reality (XR)

Metaverse platforms like Singapore’s Digital Urban Experience Lab allow stakeholders to interact with UDTs via VR, exploring proposed developments in immersive 3D. This fosters collaborative planning and public feedback 3.

3. Supporting Sustainable Cities & Reducing Carbon Emissions

UDTs are pivotal in achieving net-zero goals:

A. Energy Optimization

UDTs model energy flows across grids, integrating renewables like solar and wind. For example, Amsterdam’s UDT reduced emissions by 40% by optimizing microgrids and prioritizing solar storage during peak demand 15.

B. Circular Economy & Waste Management

UDTs track material lifecycles, promoting reuse. Oslo’s twin identifies construction waste hotspots, diverting 70% of debris from landfills through recycling partnerships 15.

C. Carbon Footprint Analytics

Cities like Copenhagen use UDTs to visualize emissions from buildings, transportation, and industry. The data informs policies such as congestion pricing and retrofitting mandates, cutting CO2 by 25% since 2022 13.

D. Climate Action via Earth Digital Twins

Initiatives like the EU’s Destination Earth simulate planetary-scale climate impacts, guiding cities in adapting to rising sea levels and extreme weather 13.

4. Community Engagement & Participatory Governance

UDTs bridge the gap between governments and citizens:

A. Co-Creation Platforms

Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative lets residents propose ideas via UDT-linked apps, such as park designs or bike lane routes. Over 50,000 submissions have been implemented since 2023 3.

B. AR for Public Interaction

Augmented reality apps overlay UDT data on smartphones, enabling residents to report potholes or view pollution levels in real time. Taipei’s CityAR platform increased civic reporting by 200% 3.

C. Addressing Equity & Inclusion

UDTs highlight disparities in resource allocation. Los Angeles’ twin revealed “heat deserts” in low-income neighborhoods, prompting targeted tree-planting initiatives 13. However, critics warn that without inclusive design, UDTs risk exacerbating social divides 3.

5. Future Opportunities & Challenges

Emerging technologies will redefine UDT capabilities:

A. Quantum Computing & Advanced Simulations

Quantum-powered UDTs could simulate entire cities at atomic precision, enabling hyper-accurate climate models and material science breakthroughs 15.

B. Autonomous Systems Integration

Designing and developing a drone is a complex thing. The entire process could take nearly a year. But with Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the development of next-generation autonomous and semi-autonomous drones could happen in months.

Ramanathan Narayanan, CEO of Chennai-based Dhaksha Unmanned Systems, a leading Indian innovator in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technology, says the technology has been a game-changer as the platform has streamlined the design processes, enabling Dhaksha to develop innovative and efficient drones at an accelerated pace.

Dassault’s Modsim modelling and simulation tools on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is touted as a unified modeling and simulation solution that enhances design exploration, optimisation, and validation on the 3DEXPERIENCE cloud platform, he said.

Dhaksha is leveraging the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, including its SIMULIA software applications, to design and develop a comprehensive range of UAS solutions for agriculture, defence, surveillance, and delivery applications. “The technology which came into the market recently, will save 30-40% overall design development time and helps in deciding the material to be used,” said Ramanathan.

“The integration of modelling and simulation is a powerful tool that can significantly reduce the time and cost associated with physical prototyping. It allows engineers to experience every aspect of their designs virtually, enabling concurrent performance checks and refinements, which ultimately leads to better and more efficient product development,” he added.

Highlighting the ongoing innovation in the industry, Tarik Chaib, chief technology officer, CATIA, Dassault Systèmes, said air taxis could be a reality soon in Dubai. He said Dassault has the expertise to help manufacturers relying on vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft that can take off and land vertically without relying on a runway.

Narayanan said that the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has already developed an electric flying taxi and the government is working on regulations. He added that both large companies and start-ups need agility to quickly introduce and refine products. Innovation is crucial for faster market entry.

“We are equipping Dhaksha to develop next-generation drones faster and more efficiently. This will not only solidify their position in the Indian drone market but also propel the industry forward,” said Deepak N G, managing director, India, Dassault Systèmes.

The India drone market is projected to grow from $654 million in 2024 to $1,437 million by 2029, at a compounded annual growth rate of 17% during the forecast period, says a report by MarketsandMarkets. The volume in the India drone market is projected to grow from 10,803 units in 2024 to 61,393 units by 2029.

Turkey says its Akinci drone deserves more credit for helping to locate the wreckage of the Iranian helicopter that crashed in a remote and mountainous area of Iran on May 19, killing President Ebrahim Raisi and other top Iranian officials, according to Turkish media reports on May 22.

The reports say that the Akinci drone was first to find the site of the wreckage and accused Iran of changing its narrative about the use of the Turkish equipment after it provided information about the location of the wreckage and then made counterclaims that its own drone found the site.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier this week that the Akinci drone was sent at the request of the Iranian government.

According to Erdogan, despite the bad weather conditions the drone was able to conduct search operations in the region for seven and a half hours and fly a total of 2,100 kilometers.

After the Turkish drone identified the helicopter wreckage and detected heat sources believed to be the crash site in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, the Iranian search team successfully located the downed helicopter and the bodies of Raisi and the others in the mountainous terrain, according to Turkish media reports.

However, Iran rejected the notion that there was foreign participation in the search operation despite data from the Turkish drone that revealed the coordinates of the crash, and confirmation of this data by some Iranian news agencies.

After the Akinci drone captured images of the wreckage using its night vision and thermal camera and released them on the Internet, Pirhossein Kolivand, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, called foreign participation in the search a rumor.

“We did not stop the search in the dark, fog, and rain, and when we discovered the wreckage of the helicopter with our own drone, we moved to the exact place where the helicopter fell,” Kolivand said.

He claimed that rescuers from the Red Crescent found the wreckage at an altitude of 2,500 meters and “it took 40 minutes from the time of finding the wreckage of the helicopter to reaching the accident site.”

The head of the East Azerbaijan Red Crescent also cited the Turkish drone report that a “burning spot” had been detected and said rescue forces were sent to that area.

The head of Turkey, Asia, and Indo-Pacific studies at the Institute for International Relations and Strategic Research (ULISA) said in an opinion piece published by the state news agency Anadolu that the drone’s role in finding the wreckage site demonstrated the need to recognize Turkey’s commitment to fulfilling its humanitarian responsibilities through its defense capacity.

Professor M. Nazmul Islam said that, after Iran accepted Turkey’s offer to send the drone, the Akinci took off from a Turkish base at around 11:30 p.m. local time and began searching nearly an hour later. Turkey claims that it transmitted the image of the wreckage of the helicopter at 3:06 a.m. Iranian time and shared the coordinates with the Iranian authorities.

But according to Iranian media accounts, an Iranian drone belonging to the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps found the remains of the helicopter at around 5:30 a.m. local time.

A statement issued by Iran’s military said that, despite Turkey sending a drone equipped with night vision and thermal cameras, it “failed to accurately locate the crash site due to its lack of detection equipment and control points below the cloud,” referring to the adverse weather conditions.

Iran Radio reported that it was “five o’clock in the morning when the correct coordinates were finally found with Iranian equipment and Iranian relief forces.”

Iran, whose military has its own drone program, was not able to deploy its drones because they were located in the northern part of the Indian Ocean at the time, the Iranian military said.

Aerodome, a company specializing in Drone-As-First-Responder (DFR) technology, announced it has raised $21.5 million in Series A funding. The funding round, led by CRV with participation from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Karman Ventures, Immad Akhund (CEO of Mercury), and Ford Street Ventures, aims to support the continued development of DFR solutions and expansion of Aerodome’s engineering and go-to-market teams. This investment brings Aerodome’s total funding to $28 million, following a seed round in October 2023.

“Upon experiencing Aerodome’s technology firsthand on a fly-along, I immediately recognized its potential to have a scalable impact on public safety and its ability to save lives,” said Saar Gur, General Partner at CRV and Aerodome’s newest board member. “Speed is of the essence in emergencies. Aerodome doesn’t just provide police agencies with ROI, it also gives them an insanely valuable source of real-time intelligence to first responders out in the field.”

Aerodome was co-founded by CEO and reserve police officer Rahul Sidhu and Chief Architect Kenaniah Cerny. The company aims to revolutionize DFR technology with a turnkey solution that is faster, safer, and more energy-efficient than existing alternatives. Aerodome’s fully automated and remote air support operating system is designed to provide continuous support, reducing the need for patrol officers to respond to calls by 15 percent and improving response times by 80 percent.

“As the second officer in the country to launch a DFR program, I wanted to build a more advanced, automated solution that would reduce the strain on officer resources,” said Sidhu. “Our DFR 2.0 solution is a true force multiplier, since it only requires a single operator overseeing multiple drones at once. Our air traffic awareness system acts as a better observer than human pilots – capable of tracking planes, helicopters, other drones, and even birds in all directions, which saves precious time and resources for agencies.”

Since its inception, Aerodome has rapidly grown, securing contracts with police departments and nearly doubling its earnings projections for Q1 of 2024. The company attributes its growth to its advanced, fully remote and automated DFR system, which allows for an average response time of 86 seconds to 911 calls, compared to the 7-8 minute average with traditional response measures. Additionally, the DFR system offers a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to police helicopters.

“Aerodome’s willingness to engage with our staff on the unique characteristics of our jurisdiction, and future directions with which to grow DFR capabilities, has led to high levels of confidence between our Department and their company,” said Lieutenant Robert Mitchell of the Hawthorne Police Department. “We were happy to partner with Aerodome. They did what they said they were going to do, and more.”

Aerodome has also entered into an exclusive partnership with Hextronics, a leader in drone autonomy. Hextronics will provide a drone dock equipped with an automated battery-changing system, HVAC system, and remote operational capabilities in any condition.

Between August 2018 and July 2021, the researchers found 24 instances where drones were near 500 feet of a manned aircraft in a single place.

Unmanned Robotic Systems Analysis (URSA) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida researchers have created a novel method to objectively and precisely count near contacts between drones and aircraft without relying entirely on pilot sightings.

The team analysed over 1.8 million piloted aircraft operations and nearly 460,000 flights by small, uncrewed aerial systems (sUAS) around Dallas–Fort Worth airport.

During a three-year period, the team identified 24 near-midair collisions (NMACs) between sUAS and aircraft, including two in 2018, one in 2019, 14 in 2020 and seven in 2021. The majority of close calls occurred within 1.5 miles of a runway approach or departure zone.

To avoid collisions, the researchers recommended extending the runway exclusion zone for drones at the end of high-risk runways from around one mile to 3.5 miles.

“That modification would provide enhanced protection for piloted aircraft operating at less than 500 feet above ground level during approach or departure,” said Ryan Wallace, one of the study’s authors. “Typically, small, uncrewed aircraft don’t fly above 400 feet.”

Until now, the majority of information researchers had on near collisions between drones and planes was pilots’ personal experience. Using only this data, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recorded 2,596 of these encounters in 2021 – more than double the 1,210 reports during the first full calendar year of tracking in 2015.

The goal of the Embry-Riddle researchers was to devise a more reliable way to gather detailed information about NMACs between drones and aeroplanes.

To do so, the team relied on an unmanned aerial system detection device connected to an antenna on top of Dallas–Fort Worth airport’s busy Terminal C concourse. For each sUAS within a 30-mile radius, the device captured telemetry, altitude, launch location and other details.

Researchers combined that information with ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast), as well as Mode S messages transmitted by aeroplanes and tracked by the OpenSky Network. All this information was then fed into URSA’s Airspace Awareness Platform, or AAP-NMAC – a proprietary data analytics software.

“We hope that our findings will help improve aviation safety by reducing the risk of collisions between unmanned aircraft systems and piloted aircraft operating in the national airspace system,” Wallace said.

Across all the 24 close-call events the system detected, the mean lateral distance between the drone and the aeroplane was only about 215 feet. Commercial air carriers were involved in 11 NMACs, while seven incidents involved helicopters and six involved general aviation aircraft.

All of the helicopter encounters happened within 1.25 miles of a heliport. Similarly, in 10 of the 11 air carrier encounters, the aircraft was within 1.5 miles of approach or departure and lower than 500 feet above the ground.

“Operations within the vicinity of an airport are critical flight phases for pilots with high workload levels. It is within these areas where aircraft have added susceptibility of a collision with sUAS,” said Scott Winter, co-author of the research article. “The findings from this study provide objective data for operators, government agencies and airlines to understand sUAS operations better and prevent possible conflicts.”

As of 2020, an estimated 1.46 million sUAS were operating in the US national airspace system, the FAA has reported. By 2025, the FAA predicts the small sUAS fleet will include nearly 2.4 million units.

“The proliferation of drones, particularly ones available to the general public, poses obvious risks,” said research collaborator Dr Stephen Rice. “Unfortunately, not all drone operators are responsible, knowledgeable or safety-minded. Many of them are not even aware of the rules they must follow.”

In the majority (96 per cent) of the near collision events recorded by the team, the drone was operating in excess of the maximum permissible altitude for that area.

The researchers’ findings were published in the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International Journal of Aerospace.

If you are a drone fan, it’s likely that you are aware of what the French drone manufacturer Parrot has done for the industry. Parrot’s toy drones, which were simple to fly and packed with functionality, were its main selling point for casual drone lovers all over the world. Beginner drone fans frequently utilised Parrot’s drones before upgrading to more costly, advanced drones due to its low cost and simple-to-replace parts. It wouldn’t be incorrect to say that hundreds of skilled drone pilots began their careers with a Parrot drone for the same reason.

Considering how common Parrot’s toy drones were in the consumer drone market, the fact that they are no longer available may come as a surprise to many seasoned drone aficionados. What transpired to Parrot and its play drones, then? As it turns out, Parrot stopped manufacturing consumer drones in 2019. Let’s look into some of the potential causes of this.

Why did Parrot stop making toy drones?

Most people are unaware of the reasons why Parrot left the consumer drone industry in 2019, despite the fact that we all know it happened. The simplest explanation would be the Chinese drone manufacturer DJI’s absolute control of the consumer drone industry. With its well-liked Mavic, Spark, and Phantom drones, DJI commanded a dominant third of the consumer drone industry in 2018, a year before Parrot left the market. This pattern is still prevalent today. At the moment, Parrot’s financial condition was also not looking bright.

Instead, the head honchos at Parrot thought it was better off focusing its efforts in the commercial drone space, which had the potential to help them shore up the revenues. By July 2019, Parrot stepped away from the consumer drone space and focused all its attention on the commercial drone space.

How Parrot has fared since it stopped making consumer drones?

In hindsight, moving away from making consumer drones seems to have worked well for Parrot. Since exiting the space four years ago, the company has secured several tenders for its drones from governmental agencies across the globe. These agencies range from organizations manning borders, law enforcement agencies, and fire services. Some of this growth has also come in the backdrop of several organizations backing off from using Chinese-made drones thanks to growing concerns centered around cybersecurity and data transparency concerns.

The company’s ANAFI USA drone, which targets the defense markets, has also seen widespread deployment in several NATO countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Northern Europe, and Japan, resulting in improved revenue figures for Parrot. The company also seems to have benefited from the Russo-Ukrainian flare-up, which started in February 2022.

Data from Parrot’s most recent earnings report indicate that the sales of the company’s commercial microdrones, primarily the ANAFI for security (ANAFI USA) and inspection (ANAFI Ai), have risen by a significant 22%. In fact, revenue from the sale of these drones now accounts for more than 56% of the group’s total revenues.

In light of this data, it is evident that Parrot’s decision to exit the consumer drone market has worked well for the company, given its better financial position since 2018. It will be interesting to see if the company plans to re-enter the consumer drone space sometime in the future.
