With a population of 51.97 million in an area of roughly 100,000 km², South Korea is among the more densely populated countries in the world. And despite its smaller size, it has a real GDP ranking in the global top 15 countries, which translates into high purchasing power. In other words, the country certainly has the financial capacity to be a leader in drone technology.

But what can drones be used for in South Korea? In addition to already-popular drone shows, South Korea also has plenty of forests and approximately 70% of the country is considered mountainous. This bodes well for the aforementioned drone deliveries since drones are capable of traversing these terrains faster and more efficiently than other services (think medical emergencies).

Additionally, the urbanization rate of 81.5% is not only another good sign for deliveries, but it also suggests that the areas outside of cities are not so densely populated, which means that there is plenty of space for drones to operate in Energy, Agriculture, and Construction operations (the top three global industries). Finally, with an aging population and plenty of infrastructure that needs to be sustained, there is a lot of potential for automation, and this is something drones can excel at.

South Korean Drone Market Composition

This brings us to the topic of what drone companies in South Korea are already doing. Based on results from the latest Drone Industry Survey, there is a very high amount of diversity in the South Korean drone market, with no industry segment taking up more than 20%. The highest proportion of companies are either hardware manufacturers (17%) building drones for others or work in consulting (17%), sharing their advice and knowledge on the ins and outs of this competitive landscape. Closely behind these, we find software manufacturers (14%) and companies that specialize in adapting drones for special tasks through engineering & integration (14%).

Perhaps the most interesting observation here is that the two segments which are usually at the top of drone activities fall into fifth and sixth place within the Korean drone market. Drone Service Providers (DSPs), which are usually the most common type of drone company, represent only (10%) of drone companies in South Korea, while Training & Education companies also represent 10% (despite often being the second most common business focus).

And yet it is equally interesting to note that South Korea has a lot more mid-size drone companies than in the rest of the world. Although it is still the case that a majority of drone companies in South Korea have 50 employees or less (75%), there is a relatively high amount of companies with 50-200 employees (17%). In North America, this figure was only 9%, while the DACH Region only had about 6%. Essentially, medium-sized drone companies in South Korea are 2-3 times more common than in other wealthy economies, which is certainly a unique feature of the South Korean drone market.

What do drone companies in South Korea prioritize within this competitive landscape? Not surprisingly, the top priority in this market is also Marketing & Sales. After all, when competition is fierce, companies need to spend a lot of time and resources to stand out and increase their sales to solidify or expand their market position. Other top priorities are Software Development and Hardware Development, which once again suggests that the South Korean drone market is a bit more focused on producing drones themselves rather than selling them as a service.

Finally, two important points regarding proprieties and go beyond the results of the annual survey. The first is the importance of securing financial resources to continue growing. Many drone companies in South Korea find it difficult to acquire long-term contract funding, while others such as Pablo Air have chosen to prepare for an eventual IPO to expand their financial resources. Either way, increasing the amount of investment will be an important issue for South Korea. The second important issue for the South Korean drone market as a whole regards international growth. Although exports reached a level of US$11.1 million in 2023 and this was almost 5 times higher than the initial plan, it is nevertheless a sum that needs to continue to rise in order to realize the country’s full drone market potential.

KIAST and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Infrastructure of Korea have invited my organization, Best Events Productions and my association, Malaysian Autonomous Intelligence & Robotics Association (MyAIRA) to be co-organising partners of the Korea Drone Expo 9-11 May 2024.

India aspiring to be the leader of Industry Revolution 4.0 has set the target of being a major global hub for drones by 2030 which will boost the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 1-1.5 percent while adding at least five lakh jobs in the coming years.

However, certain exceptions are being granted for defense, security, and research and development (R&D) purposes. These sectors would still be able to import foreign-made drones, but only with “due clearances.” In the meantime, the import of drone components is being allowed without any sort of approval.

This ban on importing foreign drones is the latest attempt by the Indian government to provide a boost to the nascent domestic drone industry.

In the last few months, the country has introduced a series of policy reforms to give more impetus to indigenous drone manufacturers, and has even expressed a vision to become a “global drone hub by 2030.” While it’s not immediately clear how India plans to achieve that status while adopting a policy approach that borders protectionism, momentum has been growing across industries for “atmanirbharta” or self-reliance initiatives.

Amber Dubey, a joint secretary with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, insists that “this is a good time to invest in the Indian drone industry.” Explaining that the import ban will serve a two-fold purpose, Dubey says:

First, it will promote “Made in India” drones. And there’s also a security angle… there are allegations, not much is proven… but there’s always a risk of malware and spyware where a drone user may unknowingly transmit images to a foreign country.

Dubey further acknowledges that while the Indian drone industry may not be on par with other countries at present, a system of checks and balances that is being put into place will bring about the required transformation. Here’s Dubey has to say:

In August 2021, we came up with the liberalized drone policy. Then, we released the drone airspace map which freed up almost 85-90% of India as a green zone where you could just go and fly for business or for personal needs. Then the Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) policy was released last month, followed by the drone type certification policy. So, there’re a series of steps that we are taking… because first comes the policy, then the demand and supply follow. We’ve set the foundation that was needed. And now you’re seeing some very sharp brains, who could’ve taken up high-paying jobs in the corporate sector, running drone startups straight out of college.

While the news is being welcomed by commercial drone manufacturers that would otherwise be forced to compete with established global players such as DJI, Skydio, and Parrot, consumer drone users are disappointed with the government’s decision because there are simply no options available for them in the domestic industry.

This is a bad move for bloggers and travel enthusiasts. Govt need to introspect such decision without having advanced technology commercial drones on other hand. And let the competition takes so that the customer has a fair chance to what he wants to choose, govt shouldn’t deter

— Traveller 🧭🇮🇳 (@Travell61462932) February 10, 2022

Arun Thomas, CEO at drone rental company Aktiv Global, also comments:

Though I support make in India, any kind of import ban or protectionism is not going to help the Indian drone industry and drone users. Incentives are welcome, few restrictions are acceptable, with the national interest in mind, but banning imports will be counterproductive. Indian consumer drone users and drone enthusiasts will be the most disappointed.

Meanwhile, some drone professionals are highlighting that the import ban has come as a “do or die” opportunity for the industry.

“Indians sometimes forget how smart they are and get lazy in innovating or building superior products. Necessity is the mother of all inventions! So once you have no other option left, you are forced to build yourself. Now this is our tiny island and we survive with what we make ourselves or perish,” says Dr. Ruchi Saxena, coordinator of the India Flying Labs network.

Image: Ehang

Unmanned passenger drone designed and manufactured by Chinese firm EHang completed its first commercial flight demonstration in Guangzhou last Thursday marking significant progress in China’s ambitious low-altitude economy push amid intensifying global competition.

Before the flight, the drone had acquired the world’s first type and airworthiness certificate for a pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from the Civil Aviation Administration of China for an unmanned passenger drone operation, according to Guangzhou-based aircraft technology company EHang.

The EH216-S model aircraft, which is designed and manufactured by EHang, has reportedly completed over 42,000 successful flights, and has a top speed of 130km/h (81mph).

The flight route is preset, and once the destination has been selected and the take-off command is executed, the aircraft autonomously follows the predetermined route.

In recent years, bolstered by a suite of supportive policies, China’s low-altitude economy has witnessed rapid growth and a sustained increase in aircraft and enterprises.

The low-altitude economy could contribute between 3 trillion yuan and 5 trillion yuan (US$705 billion) to China’s economy by 2025, according to a development white paper published last month by the International Digital Economy Academy in Shenzhen.

Low-altitude economy refers to a comprehensive realm of industries centred around civil-manned and unmanned aerial vehicles, including manufacturing, low-altitude flight operations and integrated services.

Industry insiders said it has vast potential for future prospects, and could become a trillion-dollar industry significantly sooner than the autonomous vehicle sector.

This year, 16 provinces included low-altitude economy, general aviation and other related concepts in their government work reports.

On Thursday, Guangzhou also released a set of measures and detailed policies to promote the high-quality development of the low-altitude economy, including a subsidy of up to 30 million yuan (US$4.2 million) for eligible low-altitude industry projects, in an effort to forge a multibillion-dollar industry cluster.

To boost the development of the low-altitude economy industry, Guangzhou will also launch the first unmanned aerial tourist sightseeing route, with more than 10 stations set up across three routes.

Neighbouring Shenzhen has also rolled out supportive measures, including advantageous policies intended to attract businesses and subsidies, as well as incentives to innovate and expand businesses.

Low-altitude flight activities could include passenger transport, cargo delivery and other operational tasks.

Commercial passenger drones have the potential to save time during morning and evening rush hours in cities as it allows for flying in a straight line, avoiding pedestrians and traffic lights.

The vertical take-off and landing means there’s no need for a runway, and its smaller size than helicopters results in significantly reduced noise.

Therefore, the associated infrastructure costs are relatively lower, and it can even make direct use of the rooftop spaces in urban areas.

In addition to aerial sightseeing and passenger transport, the drones could also be used for aerial logistics, emergency medical rescue, as well as firefighting.

Source
