1. Easy to Deploy

The DJI Dock 2 is remarkably easy to deploy. It is physically smaller and is approximately 70% reduction in both size and weight compared than its predecessor making it easily transportable by two individuals. With the previous system, operators would have to take the Dock onsite and use the M30 to confirm if there was a strong enough GNSS signal in the area. This was a time consuming process which could last over 5 hours. This is no longer an issue; operators can now use additional drones to evaluate a site without taking the Dock 2 with you. Thus, reducing the evaluation period from over 5 hours to a matter of minutes. Transporting a drone that weighs less than 1kg is easier and much more efficient than transporting an entire dock unit for site evaluation.

In a landmark move for the commercial unmanned aerial system (UAS) industry, Hylio has become the first company in the United States to secure Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for swarming UAS that exceed 55 pounds. This approval permits Hylio to operate up to three of these heavy-duty drones simultaneously with a single pilot and without the need for a visual observer (VO), even during nighttime operations. This development, as announced in a Hylio company announcement, marks a significant step forward in the utilization of drones for large-scale farming operations.

Arthur Erickson, Co-Founder and CEO of Hylio, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This is a critical step forward in making UAS a viable option for even the largest-scale farming operations.” Erickson highlighted the potential impact on the agricultural sector, noting the capacity for increased productivity and the solution it offers to the labor shortages plaguing the industry.

The ability to swarm these larger drones promises a substantial boost in efficiency for agricultural tasks such as spraying and spreading applications. A single Hylio AG-230 AgroDrone, one of the models benefitting from this new exemption, can cover approximately 50 acres per hour. With the ability to operate three drones simultaneously, a single operator can now manage up to 150 acres per hour. This not only triples productivity but also allows for multitasking, such as planting seeds with one drone while others perform different treatments.

Hylio’s FAA exemption is specific to its drones that meet certain operational and safety criteria, which all of Hylio’s UAS models do, thanks to their control via the proprietary AgroSol GCS software. This achievement sets a precedent that other companies can follow, potentially expanding the capabilities and efficiency of agricultural drone use across the industry.

Erickson also pointed out the long-standing limitation in the agricultural sector regarding drone swarming due to weight restrictions. “Swarming drones over 55 pounds has long been the desperately sought holy grail in the agricultural industry,” Erickson remarked. The exemption obtained by Hylio is expected to catalyze a significant shift in agricultural drone usage, enhancing the potential productivity of crop operations substantially.

Hylio is committed to supporting its customers through the exemption application process, offering guidance and assistance to navigate the regulatory landscape. The company’s innovative drone systems represent a significant advancement in precision agriculture, enabling targeted crop treatments that can lead to increased yields and efficiency.

This breakthrough by Hylio underscores the evolving landscape of agricultural technology and its potential to address some of the most pressing challenges faced by the sector today. With the ability to leverage heavier, more capable drones for farming operations, the future of agriculture looks increasingly efficient and productive.
In the modern era, technology has become a powerful ally in the fight against environmental violations such as illegal fishing, hunting, and deforestation. Among the various technological tools at the disposal of activists, drones have emerged as particularly invaluable. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are providing a new perspective on conservation efforts, offering a bird’s-eye view that is both comprehensive and discreet.

Drones are proving to be a game-changer for activists and organizations dedicated to monitoring and exposing illegal activities that harm the environment. With their ability to fly over difficult terrain and capture high-resolution images and videos, drones are helping to gather evidence that can be used to hold violators accountable. They are particularly effective in areas that are otherwise inaccessible or too dangerous for humans to enter.

Illegal Fishing: Drones are being deployed over vast ocean areas to monitor fishing activities. They can identify vessels engaged in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and track their movements. This information is crucial for law enforcement and can lead to the apprehension and prosecution of offenders.

Hunting and Poaching: In regions plagued by illegal hunting and poaching, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras can operate at night to spot poachers. They can also track the movement of wildlife, helping to protect endangered species from being hunted.

Deforestation: Drones provide a cost-effective way to monitor large swathes of forest. They can detect changes in forest cover, identify illegal logging operations, and provide data that can be used to assess the impact of deforestation on biodiversity and climate change.

Zoos and Aquariums: Beyond the wild, drones are also being used to monitor the conditions of animals in captivity. Activists use drones to observe whether animals in zoos and aquariums are being kept in humane conditions and to ensure that these institutions are adhering to regulations.

The use of drones is not without its challenges. There are concerns about privacy, regulatory hurdles, and the need for skilled operators. However, the benefits they provide in the realm of environmental activism are undeniable. Drones offer a unique combination of stealth, precision, and data collection that can significantly enhance the effectiveness of conservation efforts.

As drone technology continues to advance, we can expect these devices to become even more integral to the cause of protecting our planet’s natural resources and wildlife. They are not just tools for surveillance; they are beacons of hope for a more sustainable and just world.

Rolf-Ole Rydeng Jenssen envisioned using his drone-mounted radar system to measure snowfall or forecast avalanches, once he perfected it to be able to penetrate multiple layers of snow. In subarctic Tromsø, Norway, where Jenssen works as an engineer at the multidisciplinary Norwegian Research Center (NORCE), both applications would be useful. However, one January evening, a team of scientists contacted NORCE to inquire about using the flying radar for a completely different purpose: locating polar bears that might be hiding.

In early winter, pregnant polar bears excavate holes in the snow, crawl inside, and allow new snow to cover the entrance. The bears give birth inside, protected from the harsh Arctic weather by the snow that covers them and their newborn cubs. Experts on polar bears are concerned that these creatures might be too skilled at hiding. For this reason, Jenssen received a call from scientists at Polar Bears International (PBI), a research and conservation organization. Since then, PBI and other engineers have been working together to develop more efficient methods for locating polar bear dens during aerial surveys before people trip over them and unintentionally destroy them.

In Alaska’s polar bear habitats, oil and gas companies move rigs and other equipment throughout the winter. According to Susannah Woodruff, a polar bear researcher with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, “over the past two years we’ve had four dens that we know of that were disturbed in the oil fields—all dens that were previously unknown before the bears just popped out.” The possibility of den disruptions rises with increased oil and gas exploration in the Arctic, increasing the risk of harm to cubs who are more susceptible. Furthermore, these young are extremely valuable for a species that is in danger of extinction, like polar bears.

Oil and gas companies are currently required by U.S. government policies to search their sites for bear dens to avoid disturbing them. However, the device that businesses usually use for this—known as a forward-looking infrared, or FLIR, system—detects an animal’s body heat through the snow and is limited to certain operating conditions. A polar bear’s heat signal is diminished by warm weather, and it is obscured by deep or blowing snow. Furthermore, using FLIR from an airplane is a bit like attempting to scan the landscape with a smartphone camera. Users will inevitably overlook patches.

“When we looked back at how management agencies and industry were doing using this tool, the answer was ‘not that great,’” says Geoff York, PBI’s senior director of research and policy. A 2020 study co-authored by York found that FLIR failed to spot 55 percent of polar bear dens. Part of the problem is that the best weather windows for FLIR—which works better during particularly long cold periods—are now fewer and farther between because of climate change. And even under the best conditions, FLIR missed some of its targets. “Ultimately, we need to find some method that’s going to do a better job at detecting dens,” Woodruff says.

York and two colleagues came to the same conclusion while working on the freezing tundra several years ago. Frustrated with how the FLIR’s inaccuracy impacted their research, the trio started brainstorming. Radar eventually emerged as a feasible option because it works well in the conditions under which FLIR struggles. “They’re on the right track in terms of finding something that could maybe be used more frequently and isn’t weather-dependent,” says Woodruff, who isn’t involved in the radar work.

The concept behind using radar to detect polar bears is simple. The radar device is attached to a plane or drone and emits electromagnetic waves as it flies over the tundra. When the waves hit the ground, some reflect back to the radar device, and some penetrate deeper. The time it takes waves to bounce back indicates how far away a surface is. And the quantity of reflected waves differs for different types of surfaces, such as rocks, dirt, snow or water. A polar bear—which is essentially a container of water—will appear as an anomaly suspended in the snow.

Japanese company Hiro Holdings has partnered with Wise Planning Co. Ltd to use drones for mapping and recreating Japanese historical landmarks in 3D. This innovative approach aims to digitally archive historical buildings and objects as a means of preservation. The use of digital scans is crucial in protecting delicate environments and artifacts from damage caused by over-crowding or over-handling. Additionally, Japan’s ancient wooden structures are highly susceptible to fire damage and erosion, making digital preservation even more essential on the island.

Hiro and Wise intend to employ drone-based photogrammetry to develop detailed 3D models of buildings. They will also utilize smaller camera rigs to create a repository of smaller objects found inside museums. By using LiDAR-equipped 360-degree cameras, the drones will be able to generate highly accurate point-cloud models of cultural properties and landmarks. These models will provide researchers and tourists with access to precise recreations of both the interiors and exteriors of historical buildings, regardless of their location.

Hiro Holdings and Wise Planning will independently operate the flights and handle all video editing and processing themselves. Their goal is to create a new form of digital artifact that benefits Japan by protecting historical environments and enabling risk-free research, as well as appealing to a global audience. This initiative demonstrates significant progress in Japan’s UAV industry as more businesses integrate drones into their workflows to safeguard priceless cultural resources.

Drone-based thermography and handheld device thermography are two methods of using infrared cameras to measure the temperature and detect anomalies in various objects or systems. They have different advantages and disadvantages depending on the application and industry.

Drone-based thermography uses drones to carry thermal cameras and fly over large areas or hard-to-reach places, such as solar farms, buildings, forests, or crops. This method allows for faster, safer, and more comprehensive inspections than handheld device thermography, which requires manual operation of the thermal camera on the ground. Drone-based thermography can also provide geo-referenced data that helps locate the exact position of the detected anomalies. However, drone-based thermography may also have some limitations, such as regulatory restrictions, weather conditions, battery life, or image quality issues.

Handheld device thermography uses portable thermal cameras that can be held by a person or attached to a tripod or a vehicle. This method is more suitable for smaller or indoor areas, such as electrical systems, mechanical equipment, pipes, or walls. Handheld device thermography can offer higher resolution, accuracy, and flexibility than drone-based thermography, as well as lower cost and easier maintenance. However, handheld device thermography may also have some drawbacks, such as longer inspection time, higher safety risks, or human errors.

Some of the industries that use drone-based thermography are:

– Solar energy: Drone thermography can help inspect photovoltaic (PV) systems for faults, such as hot spots, cracks, or shading. It can also measure the current-voltage (I-V) curve of the PV modules to determine their performance and efficiency. Drone thermography can outperform handheld device thermography in terms of speed, coverage, and precision .
– Construction: Drone thermography can help evaluate the thermal performance of buildings, such as heat loss, insulation defects, air leakage, or moisture problems. It can also help detect structural issues, such as cracks, corrosion, or damage. Drone thermography can provide a better view of the roofs and facades than handheld device thermography .
– Agriculture: Drone thermography can help monitor crop health, water stress, irrigation efficiency, pest infestation, or soil quality. It can also help estimate crop yield and biomass. Drone thermography can be combined with other optical sensors, such as hyperspectral cameras, to provide more information than handheld device thermography .

Some of the industries that use handheld device thermography are:

– Electrical: Handheld device thermography can help inspect electrical systems, such as transformers, switchboards, cables, or circuits. It can help identify electrical faults, such as loose connections, overloads, or short circuits. Handheld device thermography can offer higher accuracy and resolution than drone-based thermography .
– Mechanical: Handheld device thermography can help inspect mechanical equipment, such as motors, pumps, bearings, or valves. It can help detect mechanical faults, such as friction, wear, misalignment, or lubrication issues. Handheld device thermography can offer more flexibility and adaptability than drone-based thermography .
– Medical: Handheld device thermography can help diagnose medical conditions, such as inflammation, infection, injury, or cancer. It can help measure the skin temperature and blood flow of the patients. Handheld device thermography can offer more convenience and comfort than drone-based thermography .

A successful first trip to the stratosphere, the second layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, was achieved by a British-built solar-powered drone with a 115-foot wingspan that can stay in the air for 20 months.

PHASA-35 departed from New Mexico during a 24-hour period, rose to a height of more than 66,000 feet, officially entering the stratosphere, and then safely touched down.

The 150 lb solar-electric aircraft was created by London-based BAE Systems at their Warton, Lancashire factory. It has a wingspan covered with solar panels.

It is powered by the sun during the day and by batteries overnight, allowing it to maintain flight for over a year operating in the stratosphere, lower than most satellites.

PHASA-35 can carry a payload of up to 15kg including cameras, sensors and communications equipment to allow troops to talk to each other or provide internet access to rural locations during a natural disaster or emergency.

It also has the potential to be used in the delivery of communications networks including 4G and 5G, such as for regions that currently have poor coverage.

BAE systems say PHASA-35 will be available by the middle of the decade and provide a ‘persistent and affordable alternative to satellite technology’, which is traditionally heavier.

PHASA-35 weighs 150kg – around the same as a panda bear and a fraction of most satellites that normally weigh thousands of kg.

Developed in collaboration with engineers from Hampshire firm Prismatic, PHASA-35 will have various uses including ‘ultra-long endurance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as security’.

‘The team have absolutely smashed this out of the park,’ said Dave Corfield, CEO of Prismatic, shortly after the launch.

‘PHASA-35’s first stratospheric flight demonstrates that this vehicle is on track to become the go-to system for long endurance, high altitude and communications applications in the future.’

The full-sized version of PHASA-35 got its maiden flight in February 2020, when it flew from the Woomera Test Range in South Australia.

This first flight to the stratosphere – the highest PHASA-35 has ever gone and close to its maximum capable altitude of 70,000 feet – took place on June 25 and was announced by the firm on Friday.

It will only be able to launch when the wind and air conditions are right, but due to its ability to stay in the air for over a year, multiple drones could be launched at once and left ready to be deployed when necessary.

Because it operates in the stratosphere, above any issues with weather like wind and rain, it can provide stable observations of a specific area for long periods.

Prismatic says: ‘Further key benefits include the simplicity of construction and ease of transportation, due to the relative low number of structures forming the overall assembly of the aircraft.’

Japan Drone/International Advanced Air Mobility EXPO 2023

After three days of fascinating new discoveries in the Japanese UAV industry, the JUIDA-sponsored “Japan Drone/International Advanced Air Mobility EXPO 2023” came to a conclusion on June 26 at the Makuhari Messe convention centre in Chiba City. The exhibition, which broke records for attendance and exhibitors (239, including 39 foreign companies), included a series of lectures with industry experts and government representatives discussing the situation of UAVs in Japan, Asia, and throughout the world.

The “Japan Drone & AAM Awards 2023” presentation included the awarding of many significant awards, with Liberaware’s brand-new IBIS2 drone taking home the Grand Prize in the hardware division. The IBIS2 weighs about 243 grammes, has a tiny 20cm airframe, and is intended for the examination of confined, interior places. It can create sharper inspection pictures and is more stable in limited spaces than its predecessor.

The Toyo Seikan Co.’s Sabot-3 gadget, which enables a tiny spray can to be fitted to a drone for activities like light concrete repair and other industrial applications, won the Grand Prize in the Audience Award category. GMO Internet Group, which held a booth discussing dangers to drone communications and other IOT security challenges, received the Special Jury prize. The Advanced Spatial Information Technology Evaluation Support Centre, Chiba University, and Gotemba City teams that created the “virtual watchtower” technology that enables quick mapping and processing of active disaster sites using affordable UAV technology won the Software award. The team hopes that their new technology can be used for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan.

In addition, JUIDA sponsored a competition between regional authorities to create drone videos as tourism PR, awarding the best of them prizes.

Next year’s exhibition will be held at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center from June 5-7, 2024.

Global Drone News will be arranging group delegations and exhibitor booths. To participate, contact us at gdc2019.marketing@gmail.com.

2023: New business mode using drones

2021-2022 is a period of great change for the drone industry. With the revision of the Civil Aeronautics Act coming into effect on December 5, 2022, social implementation will progress further, and the range of specific utilization will expand, leading to the realization of various use cases. On the other hand, from the technical aspect of “creating standards for safe operation and promoting understanding”, “weight reduction”, “high precision”, “long operation”, “improvement of aircraft performance suitable for operational purposes”, “collision avoidance technology and autonomy”.

For the 8th Japan Drone, Juida will set these themes and establish concrete partnerships with businesses that utilize drones, as well as businesses that aim to form technical partnerships and supply products. They support problem solving through business negotiations and information exchange.
