Terra Drone Indonesia, a drone technology utilization company, has successfully completed a 1,080 km coastline survey project. This work was carried out for data needs from the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), an Indonesian non-ministerial government agency tasked with carrying out government tasks in the field of geospatial information.
This survey was carried out using drones to take pictures from the air, and aims to provide Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data as a reference in forming coastline data. The shoreline survey project was carried out for 5 months, from September 2022 to January 2023, with the project area covering West Sumatra, North Sumatra, Aceh and the Riau Archipelago.
In completing this work, Terra Drone Indonesia conducted a preliminary survey of the area of interest (AOI) data provided by BIG, as a planning step in project implementation. However, during the implementation of the project, Terra Drone Indonesia experienced several significant obstacles. These obstacles are dominated by three things, namely the rainy season which causes drone operations to be hampered, locations that must be reached by sea where public ship transportation does not operate every day which makes mobilization quite hampered, and permits to fly at work locations which are quite complicated, because the work area entered Singapore’s airspace. Despite these obstacles, Terra Drone Indonesia managed to complete the job according to BIG standards.
The drone used to complete this work is the Quantum System Trinity F90+ drone, a fixed wing drone that can fly 90 minutes, has a very high failsafe system that can minimize flight operation errors by the operator
Compared to conventional methods, drones can complete this project much faster and the data generated is more accurate. If using conventional or land methods, this project can be completed in a longer time.
Michael Wishnu Wardana, Managing Director of Terra Drone Indonesia said “This shoreline survey project is proof that drone technology can be utilized in various fields, including in shoreline survey projects to obtain accurate and efficient data. This is a challenge for drone technology companies to continue to develop drone technology and provide the best solutions for various industrial sectors, including the government.”
